NIGHTS IN SOPOT / GDANSK.

Can somebody help me.

Im staying in Gdansk for 3 nights and looking for some great pubs/bars to go to in Gdansk for the day and Sopot for the night also possible places in Gdynia to go drinking.

Plus can any body give me any tips on how to get taxis and what to say when wanting a taxi from Sopot to Gdansk at 04:00 am in the morning.

where are the best places for cheap but great food.

Also where can i get Piwa for less than 7 zl.

Would really appriciate any advice.

If the weather is nice, Sopot would be nice to visit but really in the day time. I would have thought that Gdansk itself would have more to offer in the evening. There used to be a small bar in Sopot, though I can not be sure of its name-something like the Language Bar run by a Pole and a Scotsman. He was very nice and went to Poland originally as a teacher of English-check it out and help him make up his profits!

Sopot was nothing special in the evenings when I was there, mind you it was winter time so I can not judge it during the summer months. Do you still have contact with this man? I do not even remember his name but he was a nice guy from what I remember and it was quite a walk to his bar in the evening as I was staying at a hotel called Maryia or something similar. Anyway, it was right up the other end of Sopot and it was my little 'home from home' in the evenings. Most of the people who frequented his bar were Polish with no connection to England and he was having trouble with his license as the locals were complaining and not allowing him permission to gain his publicans license. In fact, when I was there he was illegally operating and his bar was supposed to be closed. The second time as I was there in Sopot, he was regrettably back in Scotland on holiday.

he opened the language pub in the latter half of the 9Os... i dont go there - full of expats and not really what sopot is all about for me... maryia is at the top of hafnerra - a nice place but a good way from town and a little further than i would feel comfortable walking... i guess sopot has changed a little since you were last there... come and visit again, bring the family

HI looks like you are the young adventurous type...you know if you go drinking too much...you'll be "borracho" and lose the scenic view and history of the place....I haven't lived there in a long time but what you can do is go by the St. Peter and Paul's church..(Sw. Piotr i Pawel_.right by the Baltic Sea -entrance to the beach can't miss it.....close to Sopot...by Ul. Piastowska ....there's a nice privately owned Pub right on the beach..I'm sure with great tasting beer...hey my aunt works there as a cook...slaves away every night...so give them some business I'm sure they will appreciate it... if you follow the street ul. Piastowska in Gdansk-Oliwa..(between Sopot and Gdansk).you'll reach the sea..then go a few yards on foot in the sand and there it will be on the right...with the view of the ocean...

your aunts place sounds really cool and ill be sure to check it out - tell us more about it, whats it called, what type of food...?

Can you tell me wjat the taxi situation is in Sopot for getting back to Gdansk as i assume the trains will stop running at a certain time.

taxi from sopot to gdansk shouldnt be more than a tenner... but saying that, its a while since i did this journey by cab

Is it still in business? I was told by someone on this forum that the pub or the whole building was up for sale. He( the joint owner) was a trained teacher of English and that should the pub venture fail then he would go back in to that line of work. I liked Sopot, not really like being in Poland at all. It had a North European feel about it something like being in Denmark, I should imagine. When I was there there may have been one or two ex pats but mostly Polish though the number has probably grown over the years.

that might well have been me - as far as i know the building is up for sale but you never can tell... the pub is still open and attracts an ex pat crowd...

Be very careful as Polish taxi drivers are notorious for ripping people off especially when they know that you are foreign. Better to avoid them if you can.

Try to take someone who is Polish then who knows how to barter well.

well... papryka is now the hippest place to get into the groove... but it depends what you mean by funky

I do not know how much Sopot has changed in the last few years but when you write that Papryka is now the hippest place to get into the grove you make it sound as if Sopot is another Manhatten. I found it nice and quiet, rather like a small Scandinavian town or maybe something like Littlehampton in Sussex by the sea but 'sleepy' is the word for it. I would have thought that down town Gdansk was more the place for action.

i seems like you dont know either sopot or gdansk anymore michal... maybe you should pay them another visit... Sopot is now one of the 'hippest' places in poland and has been for years

As well as I can remember, the Molo was nice and if you walk back towards the town there was the 'High Street' to give it a name and turning somewhere to the left was the little English Bar, I visited but as I say it was rather like a small English Littlehampton sized place.

Now that I think about it there was a McDonalds and a Pizza Hut neat to the railway station but it was hardly Las Vegas.
