Norbert: Hi!

I'm Norbert, born and raised in New York, USA.
While my entire family is Polish, which is the major language spoken in my household, I struggle with it. As a young child I spoke fluent Polish, as I began attending school I found it difficult to learn English. As time went by, English, sadly overtook my tongue as my primary language. I have realized that no one will help me learn another language but myself, that's why I'm here.
I understand 95% spoken words, I can read 60%, and speak 20% - strange, but true.

Mam nadzieję że będę się uczyć więcej polskiego języka tutaj.

Hi Norbert. Why didn't your parents make you speak Polish?

They did make me speak Polish early on.
When I would try to say something and failed, I usually became frustrated due to the fact that my initial thought was not heard. I would usually just revert back to English. It grew into a mental problem I guess. Later I had feelings of inferiority and embarrassment speaking to any Polish person as they expected that I would have known how to speak Polish fluently.
So I'm going to start trying harder.

Actually, many people here will help you learn the Polish language :) Even though I don't think you have much to learn, maybe it's more about getting your confidence in using the language but you just have to try. I have Polish friends who really encourage me to speak the little Polish I know when with them. They will correct mistakes if I make them and I now have more confidence when I try it out on them. They are also very positive when I get something right! :)

The language forum here is a good one. Thanks to them my understanding of written Polish is getting better. So please use it :)
