American Girl with A Polish Heart

Cześć! My name is Elizabeth, 18 years old, and I am a 4th or 5th generation Polish-American. I unfortunately do not know much about my Polish roots or that particular side of my family. It's a shame, really.

Though my Dad always told me I looked and acted "polski", and my adorable Polish neighbor would say about me, "She look a-like a little Polish doll!", I never got much exposure to the Polish culture. I knew a few words, but my knowledge ended there.

I've always been fascinated by the Polish culture, though. I just adore everything about it; the wonderful people, beautiful and complex language, yummy food and the gorgeous art/architecture etc..

So I am now making it my mission to get back in touch with my Polish roots! It's always been my dream to visit Poland, but I believe first, I must learn the language! It's super difficult, but I think since I am passionate enough about it, that I will achieve fluency (or at least something close to it!) within a decent amount of time.

So I just thought I'd introduce myself to everyone on this forum and maybe see if anybody is interested in helping me out (exchanging emails, video-chatting and so on) I think it'd be great to have a mentor of sorts, or even just someone who is trying to learn the language as well and would like a "buddy"!

And after I can speak Polish impeccably...my next step will be to find myself a lovely Polish man to marry! :)

He is actually a Scot living in Poland & Thinks he is somehow more Polish than Polish Americans LOL

Well there are a few who will latch onto the fact you are a young female...

No doubt you will get lots of emails from guys who are only after a passport...or something more basic...

just be a bit carefull who you give your email address to....

And to PolskiMoc- That's not so nice of him to tell me I am not Polish because I live in America! I know I still have a lot to learn, but I am making the effort, and I am proud to be Polish! (Even if I only am a small percentage)

Hi Elizabeth, have you been to any Polish festivals? If not, you should go. You'll meet so many Polish people there, and particularly men.

That's so sweet. Just remember that Poland is not a theme park, it has the good and the bad. Try not to idolize it and be prepare to discover all the sides.

This may be true but why should she do that? The girl is just trying to embrace her heritage. Let her do that, explore and celebrate it, before mucking into all the other...

I was tellin' folks on the forums here just the other day that I have Polish American (girl) friends who wanna marry a Polish guy.

Whatever, kids these days. Go to college and learn something useful.

She can do that and discover her Polish roots at the same time. Imagine that! *rolling eyes* It will not stunt her growth or something.

But it IS useful to me.

Don't get nostalgic so much, that you end up being blind.

Marry a lovely man and be happy :), let being Polish or American or any other be a coincidence... just my 2 cents as they say :D :)...

Poland and Poles are people who always had a big heart, and we love the world and all its people. Yes there are disturbing specimens, but those are pain personified, and they never could subdue the free and sincere Polish heart, which was always a part of this whole world, not just a race, continent or a culture.

You don't wanna wait that long :) In fact, turn these two steps round and you'll probably find learning the language happens a lot quicker. Lovely Polish Man probably speaks English already.
