there are many, many topics about poles who move to other countries in search of better lives and for work. How bad is it in Poland? although i understand poland's economy suffered much for years under a communist economy, its still hard for me to imagine that a european country isn't like usa or canada basically because i think of germany, uk, and france which are a few of the world's largest economies by country. btw, since germany is the world's #3 economy, why can't poland take advantage of that and do something w/e that is so that they can improve things? i know that the u.s. and canada depend very much on each other for economic prosperity. but then y is it that mexico isn't too prosperous?

The situation is not bad - since there are people from other countries going to Poland looking for a job, for example this post.

I hope that this isnt a provocation..

Germans hit road in search for jobs

More Germans are emigrating than at any time since the war, driven from home by unemployment or the search for better job prospects.

Around 145,000 mainly young people turned their backs on the country last year, more than at any time since 1945, and almost a three-fold increase since the 1980s, according to the Federal Office of Statistics.

The favoured countries were America, followed by Switzerland, Poland, Austria, Britain and France.

Doctors and academics constitute the largest groups of those leaving. Doctors in particular are choosing to move to Switzerland and Britain, where they are better paid and have to do less overtime.

Young scientists and researchers are moving to the United States, where universities are better funded.

The figures reflect Germany's chronically high unemployment rate of about 10.5 per cent.

But the real emigration figure is believed to be even higher, since many émigrés do not tell the authorities that they are leaving. At the same time about 500,000 so-called "gastarbeiter", or foreign guest workers, left the country largely because there was not enough work.

Meanwhile in Austria there are now more German than Turkish "gastarbeiter", most of them working in the hotel and restaurant trade - overturning a decades-old trend.

Germans have reacted positively to advertising campaigns from England, Canada, Australia calling for tradesmen, engineers, teachers and nurses.

Labour experts have been warning for years of the dangers of Germany's growing emigration.

In the 1980s emigration stood at around 50,000. The year after the Berlin Wall fell the rate almost doubled to 99,000.

"This emigration situation is suicidal for us," said the migrations expert Klaus Bade Jungen. "We're bleeding to death."

He said that he expected emigration trend to continue in the coming years.

Of additional concern is that qualified workers from abroad are not choosing to come to Germany.

Economic experts have warned the government that unless it opens its doors to the mobile eastern European workforce, which is currently barred from working in Germany, the country will face a serious skills shortage.

It seems europe is going on a merry go round. While Polish are coming 2 Britain and Ireland for better money the Ukranians and Belarusians are going to Poland for the same the pay is to good in Poland compared to these countrys.Probably then some poorer country will fill vacancys left in Ukraine and Belarus because to them the pay to good in these countrys.

It`s partly that way - but all those movements of people are minimal - and the differences in pay aren`t really that big if you take into account the difference in living costs - which most of the people who are moving around Europe that way DOSN`T take into account.

The Polish economy - since 1990 is in a constant boom - there has been a slowdown around the year 2000 in which all of that unemployment had been created - but right now everything has gotten back into normal.

You have to know that our country is something comparable to a military base - from which the Asian corporations are attacking European markets - a large part of Asia is manufacturing here its cars and electronics that are being sold in W. Europe and we are a major - in the future the largest logistic center for the Asian companies (especially Korean) who had already entered and are entering the European markets. On the other hand many European - and in a smaller extent American companies are relocating their manufacturing, R&D and financial centers here - cose it`s simply cheaper for them.
And in addition our home companies are growing stronger in both Europe an Asia each year.

Those people who are migrating and want to stay for good in the UK or elsewhere are making a huge error - an error for which they are going to have to pay.

There is a lot of interest in the polish market because it is cheap to purchase businesses in poland (its all bargain basement) and there is little competition..

Normally when you talk about boom times, you expect people to be better off and doing well, not the case in poland.

The average income in Poland had increased by a coupple of hundred percent during the last 17 years.. and if a pearsons income increases by a 4,5% in a year (page 44)

http://www.stat.gov.pl/opracowania_zbiorcze/infor_spol_gosp/2006/06_06 /06.pdf

while the inflation is below 1% then his income increases by more than 3% - which is making him poorer.

That was perhaps in 1989-1992. Now the situation looks fully different.

People are getting better of - section 6:

stat.gov.pl/opracowania_zbiorcze/maly_rocznik_stat/2006/10_ mrs2006.pdf

Of course some people aren`t getting better of - those who, since 17 years now, aren`t able to cope with the new reality - they often land on the street - but most people are getting much better off.

I don't know numbers but why so many English people leave England and move abroad ( quite big percentage ) if England is so rich country. people migrate for many different reason.

And for lots polish going west for work is like mirage- they imagination which is not true. Lots of them didn't find work and came back another realised that theya were doing better in Poland and came back.

Well, lef I`m sure you`ve ment: "mmmm, I wonder why???????"

--------------------

And why ? - becaouse the wages here are rising and there are more and more job opportunities - and if someone chooses to work in the UK in a job below his qualifications (not mentioning dignity) for - if you take into account the living costs - 150% of that what he would be getting paid here in a similar job - for a long time then he`s simply forgeting his learnt profession and is increasing his chance for working in some shitty job for the rest of his life.

I dont honestly think many Polish will stay for good, I think there is a large influx because it's an open market, it will slow down, there will be some that stay, the ones that get good jobs, meet / marry over here...but like you said, why bother getting such a high degree of education if you're not going to use it

Nonsense - they will return to Poland with a lot of money.British currency is the world's strongest currency at the moment and when they return to Poland with £ 10,000- £ 25000 cash they will definitely not think they have made a mistake.Wake up.

And what they will do then ?

10.000 pounds is roughly 58.000 PLN. For 58.000 PLN they can buy a 6 year Toyota Land crousier

Wel Wujek,I think you need to actually experience life in other countries. They will buy their car in the UK where cars are much cheaper than Poland. They will then drive back to Poland with their car and their cash and they will either buy a house and look for a job or they will start a business. If you tell these Polish people they are making a big mistake working in the UK,Ireland etc they will just laugh.

2 sorts of English people move abroad.

1.Retired people. They like England and have worked all their lives but they do not want to spend every January-May shivering indoors worrying about the heating bills,so they go to Spain,Australia for the sun and cheaper costs(especially if they sell their UK house they will have plenty of money)

2.Whinging Poms. You know these people-they have a good life-even easy life but they are always complaining and see USA etc on TV and think everything is better there.I know a
couple without children here in the UK with a joint income of £100,000,nice house, many holidays etc but they always complain about taxes, quality of life etc. They want to go to USA etc and I tell them to try it.The problem in Britain is many people are spoilt and expect too much (materially) from life.

Truebrit are you for real, that sort of money is only chicken feed and it won't go a long way.., I've come to the conclusion that its better to work in the west and spend you money on vocations in poland...living and working in poland has so many stresses and nothing is certain.

Some people are doing very nicely thank you very much but please consider the vast majority of people on fixed income, pensioners and the unemployed.

Poland is paying for western prices and earning eastern wages. ( welcome to the EU) and the situation will not hold on. It seems the small percentage of rich people in poland are having a field day all under the protection of the EU parliament.

It may pay wujek to open your eyes when you are next in the supermarket or walking the streets of a night time, you may get a shock in what you see.

It depends how materialistic each individual is.If someone (a couple without children))has a large house, big garden,2-3 new cars, several overseas holidays each year and they are still not content and want more things -then they will never be happy. They can migrate to the USA with its 2 weeks per year holidays and longer hours and have a bigger house with a swimming pool but they will probably still want more.

My brother has two kids, two cars several holidays a very larage house and he and his wife are the happiest people I know, but they have full lives and dont have time to moan about things that are not important

This shows how expensive things are in England
In Australia the prices are quickly getting same as in poland especially for food, and meat.

A smart shopper here can pick a a carton (20kg) of oranges for 15$AU.. approx 35zl or potatoes 20kg for $12Au.

Poducts such as cheeses are dearer in poland.

Pork and chickens taste better in poland (almost equal in price here)
The red meat offered in shops in poland would only be offered up as animal food here.

Poland has very little lamb, veal or beef.

Beer is about the same price here, vodka is cheaper in Poland.

Homes are cheaper in Poland and so is rent.

The only problem is that workers here earn 4 times more than there counterparts in Poland.

When Was I last in Poland.....(Have been there 10 times, x 3 months) last time 2 years ago.

Going back soon.

So instead of working 2 years in the UK and then returning to Poland with 10k or more sterling it would of course be better if they spent 2 years unemployed and earning nothing? You might think that Lef but nobody else does.
