My grandfather, Wasyl Oleksiuk was born in Rodzom, i believe he had a sister, Catherine or of similar spelling.

Wasyl ended up in Germany, and eventually went to Australia to live with his wife in 1950.

He passed away many years ago, and i know nothing about his background/family etc in Poland.

Any connections out there?

Thread attached on merging:
"OLEKSIUK." Phone Book lookup please..

So my GF comes from Rozynsk Maly. And would like to write to others with the same surname in the area, in the hope that someone is related....

Could someone do a lookup in the phone book (i assume the Polish phone book has addresses) for OLEKSIUK. Not sure how Your phone books are arranged, but if its possible to narrow it down the actual villiage - Rozynsk Maly, or the main town/city that covers that Villiage, or something like that. Possibly Goldap might be the main closest town/city. Province Suwalskie.

I dont care how many letters i have to write.

If its many listings then a close up photo or something.

Please....

Anyway, i'm not having much luck so far trying to establish where my grandfather was born. Look, some indications its in Urkaine (rozen maly) and others are its in Poland, Rozynsk maly.

Prior to WW2 he did some work in his home town in a saw mill. Wanting to see if a saw mill exists in his home town.

Can someone suggest where i can look for a saw mill in Rozynsk maly, or perhaps it was situated nearby.

data.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.dll?jg~jgsys~shtetlexp5b

Go to the the above website, Jewish Gen. org and this should give you the location of your village. There are two listed; but according to the maps they seem to be in about the same area, which is North of Warsaw, and between Gdansk on the left, and Kaunas, on the right.

Were they Catholic? If so I can see if I can find the Archdiocese that the church would be in.

I also found this article on Dogpile.com, which talks about a Sawmill in Danzig, now Gdansk, that was used as a workcamp during WWll.

Hi

thanks GrandeSande,

You jewishgen link didnt work - i tried adding the www first, and also tried removing data and adding www, doesnt work. Could you please give it again.

On the docs i have it lists his place of birth as : Rozen-Misty, Rojen Malys, Roszen, Rorzon, Rozen-Malej bez. Kolomea, Rozen-Malej. He was born in 1913.

He was Greek Catholic.

Hi Bobby,

Here it is: jewishgen.org/databases

Then scroll down to _Eastern Europe_ and click on _The Jewish Gen Shtetl Seeker_
Click on _search for places by name_

go to -Town Search_ and enter the name of the town, leaving all other choices empty, except for choosing the _Sounds Like Search Method_

It should give you several choices and then you can check them out on the map of your choice.

This clearly looks to be Ruthenian (Ukrainian or Belarussian) surname of patronymic origin. The Polish ethnic equivalent would by Bazyli Oleksiak, and the English one -- Basil Aleckson.
