"on and off" as an expression in Polish

Is there a Polish expression for "on and off", in the context of doing something but not continuously?

e.g. If I am talking about going to the gym, how can I say "I have been training on and off for X years?". In German I might use "ab und zu". Does Polish have something like that?

Hmm thanks, but I am not sure that that covers exactly what I want to say because there is an implication that I trained irregularly, rather than that I went through periods of training and not training...

how about - "Nie regularny". Not sure if "regularny" is a polish word but I've heard it used frequently from my husband's family who live there so it is accepted much like "weekendu".

Just flex your muscles! and lift her up and speak the international language of LOVE!

od czasu do czasu

Is "from time to time" and I agree with benszymanski that it describes more of an irregularity to the sentence.

Thanks for your ideas.
Nie regularny, okazjonalnie, these all imply irregular training though. On and off in English gives the clear impression that you trained solidly, then had a break, then resumed again etc.. rather than just sometimes you went to the gym and sometimes you didn't. Maybe there isn't an equivalent.

Bingo! Great! Just occured to me I could also probably say "cwicziłem lata, ale z przerwami'

czasowo

totally wrong... (means temporarily according to my dictionary)
benszymanski:
cwicziłem lata, ale z przerwami

I like this one, until somebody truly bilingual comes up with an alternative
