Opening Kebab shop or Malaysian restaurant in Poland?

Hi everyone,

I was talking with Mihaw (my Polish friend who lives in Prudnik) and he told me the most famous food business in Poland is kebab shop. I am Malaysian who is working as a chef and also studying in UK and I got this plan of opening a Malaysia restaurant somewhere in Europe.

What do you guys think? Just give me a rough idea and suggestion about opening between kebab and Malaysian restaurant in Poland.

Just imagine Malaysian restaurant serving authentic Malaysia food in Poland. YUMMY!

i would say the kebab shop would be more profitable due to smaller operations.

if the secret recipe involves the kebab meat tasting and looking like dog meat, as it did when i was in the UK, then maybe you should rethink all operations.

I don't want to know the recipe - but a general idea what the product is made from would help determine if it is cheap/expensive or available in Poland. I assume it's made of lamb or a similar kind of meat?

I would go more exclusive and open a good Malasian restaurant. You can get all kinds of kebabs and stuff on train stations or dirty streets. But the initial investment would probably be higher than opening a kebab kiosk.

I dont tend to take a risk in opening a big potential restaurant in Poland. I am planning something more relaxing, place to hang out with family and friend type of restaurant. And one thing i know for sure, Poland is loosing its young generation coz they are mostly in the UK working there.

I think it is a great idea, but the Polish are not so experimental with their food. Poland definately doesn't have Malaysian food yet but you would need to educate your customers.

Why it is a good idea to open one of these two (i'd rather say kebab coz Polish ppl have no clue about Malysian food and usually do not like to experiment):

-the economic boom
-still high unemployment rate (which means cheap labour)
-Polish people go to the restaurant rarely, but the rate grow very fast, therefore there are more and more restaurants needed
-Poland is beautiful and relatively cheap country

u know my dad used to talk about muskrats growing up. personally, they can
keep emm. they mentioned muskrats, frog legs, turtle, etc. pheasent.

There will also be home made pizza. smoothies, fish and chips and everything you can get from a fast food restaurant. I will try to survey the market in Poland.

I got two option of location, Krakow because of tourist and Szczein coz of the famous habour there. I got a few Malaysian friends who is working there and they suggest me to open it there.

salads are good, pita breads, I think you should open a health food (healthy
dining) resturant. lots of people who are on special diets cant eat any of that
even if they want to its bad for them, so maybe doing something healthy that
gears towards special diets (food were supposed to eat) in poland?

if you open up a resturant that is same as everyone else, your competition will keep
you rolling with loss of business. if you gear it towards healthy , whos going to
compete with you at other FF chains?

Hi fathi a lot of bulshit is said here, I'm a hospitality specialist working in Poland. I know the market very well. The people who say that nobody in poland likes to experiment and go to fancier restaurants, don't know where they are talking about. It all depend on location, kebab will go better in Krakow,Warsaw and tourist area's in the north. But a malaysian can work as well, if it is a good concept. There are many asian restaurants including, thai,japanese, indonesian and chinese. But this is in Warsaw, where are people living working in business and expats and have more to spend. If you want to open a kebab then better make it extraordinary great, there thousands of kebab places and some of them will be great competition. If I were you I would open something in Warsaw, where there is always a market, and something for lunch. Places for lunch are hard to find here. Think about small meals, sandwiches, like a pub. If you will have a location near to the centre or a office area, it will go like a rocket. Thinks to keep in mind when you are seriously opening something here: be Unique, on good location, and know the press. With something exotic like a Malay restauran, perhaps approaching major hotels in Krakow, Warzaw or Tri-city and looking for a concession within their hotel. Captive market as such.

Definitely Malaysian - we have soooo many kebab shops around Warsaw and not even one Malaysian restaurat! Shame shame shame..

i like kebabs :)
