I can help you obtain a Polish licence. It'll cost about 3500PLN, including test fees and mandatory training, along with meeting mandatory residency requirements.

Otherwise, you can just exchange it - again, it'll cost about 2000PLN, including mandatory residency requirements.

Ours are completely legitimate, so he has nothing to worry about - apart from passing the tests and having to travel to Poland a few times ;)

Those inept idiots would probably send him an e-mail with a scan of his driving licence, or something equally stupid :/

There is no need to spend a złoty on this. Your UK driving license is perfectly valid in the whole of the EU. That is, if you are are EU citizen of course.
Forget spending 2.000 PLN. Wasting of time and money.

A UK driving licence with 9-10-11 points on it is worth exchanging, however. The UK doesn't have 'ghost licences'.

But 2000PLN is a fair price if you want to exchange it for whatever reason - this includes full residency papers :)

don't know if this thread's still alive.

delphiandomine

do you know a way of obtaining a polish driving licence without a residence permit? I am resident in another EU country though.

It's not possible - Polish law dictates that you must be legally resident in Poland for at least 185 days a year in order to obtain a Polish driving licence. For EU citizens, the *only* way to do this is to have the EU 5 year residence permit - nothing else will be accepted.

thank you for the reply. I have heard this 5 year EU residence permit being mentioned before somewhere else as well but I still don't understand what it means. Does it mean if one has had a residence permit in any EU country for at least 5 years, this can circumvent the Polish 185 day residence rule and get me a Polish licence? No, it doesn't, does it, it would have been too easy then :-) I am not an EU citizen anyway, just have been resident in Norway (EEC) for the last ten years. It costs about 3000 Euros to get a licence here.

Yep, way too easy. You have to have the Polish EU residence permit - which is the only way to be declared legally resident in Poland. In EU jargon, you have 3 months right to live elsewhere in the EU/EEA - but after 3 months, you should have a residence permit. Some countries like the UK don't bother with this and consider anyone with a UK address to be resident, but most countries do bother.

Unfortunately, the complexity of obtaining an EU residence permit in Poland means that it's really not worth it unless you actually intend to live here.

Hi,

Im double interested here...can you tell me more about the residency permit in Poland?

I have a minor problem, I'm a 'consultant' working around Europe, what this means in layman's terms is that I don't really live anywhere... my last position was in France, before that Germany, have also done various other countries in the past few years...

Here is my problem, I left the UK when i was 21 having always lived in London a drivers license was completely useless... so I never bothered, over the years I've given up my residency status and now I bounce from country to country of course always neatly registring everywhere but never quite qualifying for things like "residency" for example in Holland this is 1.5 years or something silly, in France it's 12 months and so on...

Now i'm pushing 30 and though more than capable of driving still without a license I have some time of pretty soon and would like to spend this in a country i don't know (e.g. Poland) so I can explore the local culture, but if someone can explain to me how to do the residency stuff before-hand than I could of course do better than that and maybe end my hollidays with a license :)

Please let me know what the procedure is for this or where I could have a look to find out more about this!

Many thanks,
The eternal pedestrian

If your staying a year or less this might help... We have AAA (an auto club) where we can apply for an international driver's permit. I don't know if the UK has anything like this but it sure made my life easier. It was maybe $15, about 12 Euros. You show them your current license, take a picture, and give them money. When stopped you would present the permit along with your original license.

Those are perfectly valid (and more useful than the photocard ones). The trick is to get some Sellotape (I'd recommend Sellotape Invisible) and tape up all the fold lines before they start to tear.

Hi, I am a British citizen, having failed my driving test 3 times, all due to some bad luck. I am prepared to pay 3500 PLN towards the full cost of getting a legitimate EU/Polish license.
Please help me out. I need a license desperately to get a Job outside London. My contact details: J Raychowdhury, EMail: rcjayanta@hotmail.com, 07946466790
