Its almost that time to start thinking about buying a new car to own here in Poland, the options for me are:

Buy in Poland - risk of overpaying and dodgy dealers/owners.
Buy in the UK - cheap know the market need to insure in the UK and register at a UK address, RHD is a pain in the ass.
Buy abroad and import - huge market across the border, import tax may not be cost efficient.

So im thinking buy a car in Germany and import, the main site for Germany seems to be http://www.mobile.de/home/index.html?lang=en. If the import tax offsets the cost of driving to the UK buying then driving back most probably around £600 then that would be the way to go and of course id have a left hand drive in a left hand drive country.

I'm looking for around the 15,000 EUR bracket, most probably another Mercedes.

If anybody has any experience it would be most helpful.

Cheers.

EDIT: Just compared prices from the German site to that of English and i reckon i can save about £3k on an E class 320 like for like.

This too old for you? http://www.transeuropean.co.uk/detail.php?id=1364

Although given the way that you drive, perhaps sir might be interested in a Brabus S 5.8L with 430 BHP in left hand drive for £15,000? http://www.londonlhdcentre.com/cardetail.asp?carIndex=166

Cheers Harry, yeh it is a bit old and Wroclaw taxi like, not what im looking for, a 220 wouldnt cut it and mahogany dash nah no thanks. I'd like a Mercedes E 320 2003 or above, leather interior a must, dark coloured preferably black. Less than 80,000 miles.

As much as i like fast cars there may be an issue with seating in your 450 + BHP puszy magnet. However a test drive may be in order....

Now thats a bit more like it Harry, however i could have picked one of those up when i bought my last Merc for about £7k, in many ways i wish i did, not the 5.8 430 BHP version obviously. If money permits i'd take one of these instead BadBoy

Just dont like that series of BMW, the new ones look nice though, if i was going BMW i'd get an M3 (screw the 4 door and just to get it out of my system) still love this car but i cant say it would be better than my current motor. But hey 343 BHP and 0-60 in 5.5 seconds for less than £8k if you shop around cant be bad. Just checked the pics for that one and its fooked, when i was looking at them realistically a few years ago they were £25k all day long.

Aside from the tax, what are the registration costs of getting Polish plates onto a foreign car?

mobile.de have a sizeable percent of ghost cars which the only purpose is attracting a buyer to the dealer site. Army of guys living around Poznań are chasing bargains day and night. Are you ready to compete with them or are you going hire one of them? If the car passed the first registration in Poland is less likely that has been stolen or have wada prawna. If transaction ends up in court you have Polish seller to demand money back not szukaj wiatru w polu.

I imported a car from Germany about 14 months ago, my experience as very straightforward.

Be aware of the following:

Tax on full purchase price under 2 Litre engine in PL 4%
Tax on full purchase price above 2 Litre engine in PL 14%

If you buy a car that is younger than 6 months it is classed as a new car in PL and taxed as a new car.

If you buy a car that has less than 10,000 KLM on the clock it is classed as a new car in PL and taxed as a new car.

I found my car on this website mobile.de

If you are going to go ahead with it I will write out the procedure for you, it quite easy.

Are you double taxed if you buy a car in Germany and bring it into Poland? If so, how much is the German tax?
