My Filipino students (from Iloilo, Silay and Surigao) told me about his visit in class yesterday.

@JonnyM: really? Filipinos loved "him" (Pope John Paul ii) very much....World Youth Day of 1995, he was here in the Philippines...I worked in a delivery center here in Manila and we support EU operations (IT)....I had talked to users from Europe and encountered one user in Poland...he was very polite.... :)

That's what they were talking about. One of them attended the Mass and saw him. This is the first time I've met Filipinos. They seem really nice people.

Filipinos and Poles have a weird affinity. Leon Czołgosz shot President Mckinley out of solidarity with Filipinos resisting that president's conquest of their country. Today in America Poles and Filipinos are often brought together initially by alphabetically ordered seating arrangements in public schools due to the fact that both peoples often bear surnames starting with the letter 'Z'. In our nightclubs the two groups often hook up as well.

There's something in that. I'm on a ship right now in the Atlantic that has a multinational crew. There's Malays, Chinese Malaysians, Thais, British, Spanish, a lot of Italians, Croats, Americans, Brazilians, Filipinos and Poles. I have a chance to observe how the different groups interact and who spends time with who. What surprised me the most is that some of the Filipinos speak a little Polish and having heard me speaking it, one of them now always addresses me in Polish. The Brits and the Americans tend to sit together at mealtimes, but so do some of the Filipinos and the Poles. They get on well.

"Met" is a metaphore because we didn't meet real :) I would like to live in a tropical country because I hate winter and a low temperature. Pope John Paul II was for us most important... I think he still is and will be in the future.

I was in Manila for the YD 1995, Living in Skyland Plaza opposite Makati Med, maybe your hospital?

The day was quite awesome over 1 million people.

I do too i am polish but no one in my family seems to be proud of it and i want my daughter to be proud of herself and where she came from and i feel like i need to set a good example. i was born in the united states my grandfather came here when he was an infant when he attented school a nun changed the spelling of our last name. i remember when i was younger (before my great grandparents died) he would speak polish w/ his mother on the phone. my little girl is the 3rd generation to be born in the u.s and here that is relatively new. i am interested in the polish culture and would like to learn the language......sorry i ramble on and on but you get the idea thanks anyone who might respond :)

I know many people who are ashamed of their Polish heritage and put on a facade. It is understandable to feel detached from your heritage if your family has lived in the United States for several generations, but many Poles who recently emigrated to a new country do it intentionally because they think it will give them financial benefits.

It seldom works in Europe because Europeans can easily tell each other apart. To be blunt, it only makes them look silly. Take me for example, I speak Swedish fluently but I've had Swedes address me in English because they mistook me for a tourist.

I know a Polish couple who went to Spain on holiday and they said they were from Sweden, and yet all the tourist guides were giving them Polish catch phrases.

"Dzień dobry, we have fresh fish on the meny today!" ---

"But.... we are from Sweden!"

"No no (laugh), jak się masz? See, I know! (laugh)"

They had not traveled abroad a lot in the past and thought that they could raise their status by pretending to be from Sweden. Communism has created this kind of mentality in Eastern Europe. I have some friends from Bulgaria and they are even worse than Poles!

Feel free to PM me if you want a Polish pen pal living in Sweden. It might perhaps even double the level of cultural exchange? -;)

that seems so sad. i think bc my grandpa had a lot to prove to his parents and to others he decided i am an 'american' now and didnt teach us anything about where he came from. now that he is getting older he is opening up more about our history and i've decided to learn as much as i can i dont want my own daughter to be ashamed of anything and to have to hide who she is like my grandpa did for years.

to the other guy who asked why i didnt start my own thread... i thought it was on the same subject and didnt want mine to get deleted i'm new to the forum and have made that mistake once.

A replica of the family home of Karol Wojtyla in the southern Polish town of Wadowice has become a major tourist attraction in the Philippines.
Built in the town of Marilao in the north of the country shortly after the death of Pope John Paul II six years ago, it is now visited by crowds of the faithful as an expression of special tributes to the newly-beatified Pope.
The exhibition includes a photo display documenting the life and pastoral work of John Paul II. There is also a chapel dedicated to Saint Faustyna Kowalska, the Polish nun who started the cult of the Divine Mercy and who was canonised by John Paul II.
The replica of the Wadowice home and the chapel have been dubbed ‘a little Poland’.
Pope John Paul II visited the Philippines twice during his pontificate. A service in Manila during the World Youth Days in 1995 is said to have been the largest single gathering at a mass officiated by a pope, with an estimated 5 million people in attendance.
