Hi folks,

been on this forum the last couple of weeks now and am surprised by the amount of Irish either currently in Poland or thinking of moving there.

Anyway thought it'd be useful to get an idea of where people are or are thinking of moving to.
I'll be moving to Krakow in a few months and am sure I'll be travelling around Poland as well so it'll be good to hear familiar accents in unfamiliar places.

Sláinte agus saol agaibh,
Andy.

I'm surprised the coonts haven't started GAA in Poland yet (I can't wait for them
to do it) :-) Anyway - I hope you'll enjoy your stay in our country.

Many have threatened us with gaa but I don't think there are not enough Irish to form a team anywhere. Maybe the exception could be Warsaw or Krakow. First wave of Irish came for AIB and Dell but most of them are gone home now. Even when they were working here they went home as often as possible, Dell guys did anyway.
The second lot of us have been dragged here by Poland's greatest export, their women. They spent a few years in Ireland during the boom and then when it ended or they had children they wanted to go home, leaving us no choice but to follow them. In Lodz I've struggled to find many Irish, just 2 so far. Wouldn't make much of a Hurling team. I'm sure there are more but not nearly enough for a team.

Dia is Mhuire duit agus go raibh maith agat Torq.

If all goes well I hope to open a bar in Krakow down the line and who knows we might get a club going out of that. Did you play much when you were over here?

Story irishlodz, where abouts are ya from?
My girlfriend's from Lodz and might be there, meeting the fockers, at Easter if I've moved over in time.

Not that much, I didn't even play for a club, just had some fun with my Irish
friends, but I still remember some moves - the Dubs style! ;)

Dia is Muire duit Andy,

I live south of Krakow, just about 30 Kilometres towards Zakopane.

Here is the check list for Irish refugees ;)

Have you fallen for a Polish lady and are planing to move here with her?

Are you going to teach English when you move over?

Most people I have met living here from English speaking countries have these two things in common, there are more of course but I would be interested to know if the two above are applicable, just out of curiosity.

You have probably been to Krakow before but on the off chance that you haven't I have made a thread about it that may interest you Recommendations for Krakow feel free to add to it.

Slán leat.

Cheers SeanBM, yourself and bravo are definitely two of the regular posters here I recognise, always helpful and informative.

Yeah I tick the boxes and been struggling to find work in Dub the last year since I came back from Oz so when the missus got a transfer back to Poland it was defo time for a change.

Not been before but heading this weekend for a few days to check it out.

How's Poland for catching sport now that Setanta has packed it in?

Has the GAA scene in Warsaw been around for long or is it relatively new? Many teams to play against?

It is particularly cold here at the moment, i would recommend waiting a month before coming, if you can.

I have just defrosted the water pipe with a flamethrower....

But apart from that, you'll live it.

Getting Irish sport here is a pain in the @#$@'s. I have french channels (France 2 mainly) to get some Heineken games and all 6 nations. Otherwise its online. Bradley's in Warsaw and a few pubs around the country have sky boxes so you can get what you want. You'll need a 2m dish to get it at home!

Just out of curiosity how did the French channels "interpret" the Ireland/France world cup qualifier?

Didn't see it. It was on Canel+ where as the rugby is mainly on France 2, which I have. Had to watch the game on sling box.

Was at that game in Paris, pains to think about how things played out but cracking performance.
French supporters in general were sound and embarassed to go through in that fashion and were happy enough for the fixture to be replayed though the French FA were obviously having none of it.

Yeah it'd be the six nations I'd be keen to get a look at so hopefully be able to find a pub that will show it. Anyone been to the Irish Embassy (the pub) in Krakow?

Yep but only a few times, it is a good bar and quite big with different sections.
The Irish owner is well known in Krakow and has been here for a long time.

The are a few Irish bars in Krakow about 4, I think and in my humble opinion the embasy is the best but i don't frequent any of them. I know another member on here who hates the embassy, well at least the owner, so it all depends on what you like.

Again, I must warn you it is brass monkeys outside, I advise to postpone your travel plans if you can.

Two heads most of the time but I have yet to meet a bar man not willing to learn :)
They sell warm beer (not for me), hot Mulled wine (delicious, a must try!).

You should familiarise your self with the ingredients.
Cloves = go¼dziki (Goz-jecky)

And it would be appreciated here if you know 'thank you' and 'hello' etc...

Krakow is really beautiful, you will have a great time.
Be sure to let us know all about your trip, take lots of photos.
I like people's stories.

You could translate it directly (gor±cy whisky??), but most bars know a hot toddy and, like many a cocktail, they just use the english name, even when talking to Polish customers.
