Petrified of traveling to Poland by myself

I'm traveling to Poland for my spring break from Feb. 22-29, 2008 and I'll be traveling by myself in Europe for the first time.

I'm half Polish, but don't speak it very well. I'm flying into Warszawa and flying out of Katowice. I'm going to be visiting Czestochowa, Zakopane, and possibly Łodż, Poznan, or Wracław. Can anyone offer me any good advice? Things to do in the winter? Good clubs in any of the cities? I'm really nervous about being on my own and not knowing the language very well!

Maybe it's me, but why is Cracow missing in your list? It is one of the most beautiful cities (if not the most beautiful) and not far from zakopane. It also has *a lot* of good clubs. Definetely a must-see.

Also nearby Cracow is the wieliczka salt mine, unique in the world, and of course auschwitz. Not the most fun place to visit but I think everyone should visit it once.

But february can be a cold and harsh month in Poland, and it's definetely not the season the be out a lot. You would probably be best of with some friends in a pub drinking 'grzane piwo z sokiem' :).

I have never found any problem traveling in Poland but just take normal precaustions things that I have found bad are the pick pockets uualy around train stations and in Warsaw the taxi drivers will try and rip you off

I've taken a coach back from Poland. Actually, this was about four coaches. I somehow managed to change coach correctly each time, despite having been given almost no information. Being aware of what is going on around you is probably the most important thing.

Things to do in the winter: stay warm
Good clubs: Klubokawiarnia (the pseudo underground vibe with old PRL decor), otherwise just ask around when you are here and people will tell you what's cool..

Another good tip-if you need reasonably priced accomodation in Warsaw look up the OkiDoki hostel, the location is excellent and the prices are reasonable (even their single rooms are cheap I think) I have heard nothing but good things about the place, just look it up on the web and book a room...

I did this in the summer for the first time. I have been studying Polish for years but I had never conversed that often in Polish. I went in the summer for a month and had a blast! While my Polish was not perfect, I could still get my point across so I would definitely recommend learning some basics before you go!
and definitely try Polish beer!!!
