Poland in big development - what are the negative results?

Poland is now in a big development.

But what about the negatives result? The fast food, drugs, lots of suicides, for an example kids who believe in the media which says that anyone most look like an model, the non-religious attitudes, I could go on... All those things came whit the western influence.

I don't say that we most go back to the communism, which sucked, but only that Poland is in a big development, and we most bee careful for what we are developing to.

I think that all of those role models, drugs and crime existed under communism as well (not mentioning the time before the war and earlier (I don`t know if you realize that but Mickiewicz was a drug addict). It`s only that in those times all of that had much weaker influance.

I can only speak of myself - I was 12 years old in 1989 (but I remember a lot from those times), and beside the fact that the quality and availability of various producst has increased one, two, three years later I haven`t suffered from any kind of "cultural shock".

There was criminality, drugs and role models in the media in 1988 and 1989 as well as it is the case right now. Is the criminality higher right now ? Well probably yes. Ofcourse it is higher than it was the case during the 60s, 70s, and 80s, but it is everywhere that way.

I wouldn`t say that we`re "in a big development". Well perhaps I`m looking from the wrong perspective, cos I as far as I can remember, during my whole life there were such hanges around me and perhaps that`s why I don`t see anything special about the courrent situation...

Fast food is not that bad after all (people live fast and should eat fast too ;). As far as drugs/suicides are concerned - everything was before 1989 too. But it was hidden from the society, you couldn't find information about drug addicts or suicides there. There's no way to stop the development - the government and church have big role there. I think whichever road the European Union will go, Poland will follow (which is not always good since the EU is in the hands of Germans)...

But isn't the new govermanet against the EU in the first place ? Anyway, we have a big infuence in the EU.. I don't know how much the germans are ruling..

It`s the Eurolefties as who make black PR against us cose they can not stand that in one of the EU member states there is a real right-wing government.

And when it comes to Germany: Germany and France are becoming less and less significant in the EU with each day and they know it.

Can anyone provide me a list of simple Polish traits that people are accustomed with this culture/stereotypes

1. i.e Irish known to be "drunks" etc.
2. Are Polish known for drinking? Dancing? Racism (as I understand it) etc. those kind of things. Add to the list or correct the myths.............

Polish man - great results when working individually; average/poor results when working as a team.

Good point. Look at what the Czech Republic is (has) degenerating into: drugs, organized crime (a la the Russian mob), and pornography (hell they're trying to lower the age of consent to 14). Poland worked so hard for its solidarity I just hope they don't turn it over to the EU (which does not have the Polish people's best interests in mind).

Polish(myth) traits: con man, burglar, thief, drunk, drug adict(invented there own cheap home made version of one drug, LOL) .

but also these traits can be positive ones: Hospitability, Loyalty, Friendliness, Honor, etc etc



all those bad things out of 'Western Influence' were already present in Poland way back..... so the points raised in this thread are invalid. Its more like the West got the problemos from the East (vodka-russia , heroin- asia , cocaine- south american indians , prostitution -thats been around everywhere, theft- same... everywhere , cannibalism- russia ;-] chikatilooooooo )

Yes, but it depends on polish people how resistent they will be for bad changes and how easy to take in good changes.
We will see in 5-10 years.

okay if you say so, you trying looking at all the fat british people who live off convenience food and feed their kids a packet of crisps before they go off to school -.....and no longer cook traditional english food (no i dont mean fish and chips either, that was invented for lazy catholics that couldnt be bothered doing fish on a friday!) We're now the fattest nation in europe, not something to be proud of, churches used to be full on sundays - now people go shopping because everywhere is open the generation that is growing up now expect everything - without being prepared to do anything for it - I'm only 36 but can see such a difference in the way things are (feel such an old fart saying that but it's true)

That is true. I dont see much point in comparing old times and what is going in Poland now. I think that before we were closed country, people had to ask for passport to go abroad. They had to work hard for little salary for benefits of communists- or socialists ( however to call them) Now we are free- if someone doesn't want to work for his capitalist employee just go abroad even to England to find better job, or get better education to find better job, or open your own business......so many choices.

I see lots of drunk polish over here, but i don't think the polish are scum. And as for the tv it's totally biased anyway,then again iam a tetotal reformed alcoholic.

there is big drinking culture in England but there are also polish here who work hard all week and got dead drunk during weekend.
Everyone makes his own choices. Have 1-2 pints and good time or 8-9 pints and worse time ( especially next day).

I wouldn't say I extremely like England but there are much more opportunities for people here- and at least less nepotyzm than in Poland at finding good job.

To enjoy England you need to experience the good parts - Cambridge in summer,Hitchin free festival,Brighton,Cornwall,Devon,best parts of London etc.

truebrit the problem is that we are a nation of moaners,we keep moaning even if we shouldn't. we have a saying in poland which says it all:
"najlepiej jest tam gdzie nas nie ma" which roughly translates to : it is always better somwhere else(anyone can translate it more accurately?). if we are in poland we moan about poland if we are in england we moan about england if we....ect.
nowhere is perfect but i find england a very nice country compared lets say to germany

I didn't see all of these places- I have been to Cambridge, Lake District, Filey and York in Yorkshire.... really like them. I didn't see much in London. ( plan some trip with my friend) I was to Brighton but I didn't like much there. I know that I moan but because I moved from pretty town like Krakow to Peterborough which is ..ok.....but no much charm at all. I have never been to Scotland I have feeling taht I would like there.

I will put Manchester on my list to visit. It is quite big city probbaly what I miss in quiet Peterborough.

Peterborough is a large town without character.I can tell you best parts of London to see in one day(avoid when hot).Polish people all seem to live in the worst towns-I guess because they are cheaper for renting.

How rude, Manchester has a large Polish community! okay some may live in some of the less desirable areas but they still live in a decent city

Lovely for shopping and lunch - and the nightlife if fantastic - not as good as Krakow though - but I dont think anywhere on this planet is as good as there!

Actually,there are many beautiful towns in the UK like Chester,parts of Bath etc-but not so many in the South-East (but many pleasant historic villages/market towns etc)

We don't rent we bought house here- in outskirts in quite nice new development area- but city centre is awful.
I wouldn't say that Peterborough is is so cheap. There are quite a few jobs here and close to London ( many people commute).
But the reason is that husband moved here ( before getting to know me) about 15 years ago. I nag him all the time why didn;t you move to nicer place?
I think what is missing here is university that is why.....I am a little snobish not about money but education maybe because I am from Krakow university town?
