Poland's Growth Fastest in 10 Years

The Polish economy is revving up. In the first quarter of this year, gross domestic product grew by a whopping 7.4 percent, the highest figure in a decade.

In 2006, the country's GDP grew by 6.1 percent. The first-quarter data shows that this year may see a similar rate of growth, making Poland one of Europe's fastest growing economies. Among European Union member states, only Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Slovakia and Romania are growing faster than Poland. But, unlike in most of these countries, Poland's growth has been exceptionally stable, with low inflation and a stable external deficit.

Until recently, Poland's economic growth was chiefly driven by exports, which grew at a rate that sometimes exceeded 20 percent annually. Poland's 2006 exports totaled 87 billion euros, increasing over 22 percent from a year earlier and marking the best result for the Polish economy ever. In the first two months of 2007, exports grew by 16.4 percent. The economy ministry estimates that throughout 2007 they will total 102.5 billion euros, growing by 17 percent over 2006.

The trouble is that a lot of all this money is just coming from the EU. I have always said that if a country will make it in the West it will be the Czech Republic-they are miles ahead of Poland and always have been.

BBC News had a piece today about German construction workers in Wroclaw.

Growth, investment, in the long term it doesn't matter where it comes from or where it goes it has the end result of making a nations people richer.

Not in Wroclaw. The Germans undercut the Polish bids. That could possibly put some Polish workers on the Dole.

Really? I've been there, a really nice place but at least on the surface it doesn't look much different from Poland :)

So they should, the Poles nicked loads of German land after World War 2.

You mean the land that once was Polish? Well Germans didn't feel bad taking it few hundred years ago, so why we should feel guilty claming it back? Besides, the decision about shifting polish boarders after WWII was done over our heads. If you want to blame someone, blame Stalin.

Szczecin, for instance, is a German city and I see no reason why Poland has laid claim to it.

I thought up a million ways to refute this comment but then I looked at the map and it does apear that Michal you are right. the Czech Rep. clearly is moving westward faster than Poland and it is easily miles more west than Poland.

You can clearly see for yourselves Czech is further West.
Thanks Michal!

a high % in all of the cases ,Size of land and Population so Poland should be doing better .you want to know why is not ???? becouse of the people here leave to go somewhere else to make a buck more , right now there are lot of jobs in the major web sites looking for people to work , many of then high skills jobs or Languages skills jobs but there are no workers high skills or unskills all ther major supermakets are hiring for the past 4 monthes from Tescos to Carefour and they can not find workers same for the fast food chains !!!! so what a grow is the article talking about more then a 1 million people has left is more the imigration is a exodus !!! so Poland should be growing more the the whole of the east put togheter but is not maybe as they said Poland is not a east european Country is central bla bla bla what it is really is a Poor country that has low wages and that high skills people leave to wash dishes and make up beds in the uk that
is what it is .

yes Czech is moving west better pay , better quality of life that is way you dont see 1 million czechs going to EIRE and the UK to work like dogs for 5,35 a hour becouse Czech is not only moving West is already there !! while in Poland they still have one metro line !!!!!!!! and the Tramps looks like old boxes of steal !!!!!! 20 years later all they got was a few malls for high class to shop and a few sky rises with bank offices that the everyday Pole will never put money on it !!!! util there are no real wages , real good pay and good quality of life and power of buying for the most of the people Poland will be a second class Euro country .

Why should be doing better... ? In countries like Estonia you can bring 3 foreign factories and the whole country is running on It, you can't do It here... Besides we've got over 7% growth and that Estonia has 10% ? Good for them...

In many other countries in the region a bigger share of people work in the west but It's not noticed so much, because even If half of for exampel Latvians left, that still not so many of them.

Quoting: zion
all ther major supermakets are hiring for the past 4 monthes from Tescos to Carefour and they can not find workers same for the fast food chains !!!!

And what's wrong with that ? It's a good sign. They will have to pay better or bring people from poorer countries like It happens in almost every developed country.
