And just tell me how much Poland paid for every French soldier that died fighting the Germans at Verdun?
French military valour, not forgetting the British and Commonwealth troops slaughtered in Flanders, bought Polish independence in 1918.
French military advisers, including De Gaulle helped you keep it in 1920.
What do Poles think about the French army? - Bunch of cowards!
Wrong! Their military strategists in 1940 were as bad as Poland's were in 1939 - when the Poolish army put in a terribly poor performance. No-one, mind you, likes to tell the Poles that with the army they had they could have done 10 times better against the Germans, because it's history and you can't change it. Poles do love to distort things though!

V...this is true?.........so in effect Poland is virtually a colony of France...by default...joking now!

Polish troops whilst brave and resourceful, were no match for the cruelty driven Germans....no one was, in all honesty....even the Russians were in awe, until they used their own men as cannon fodder to overwhelm, by shear absolute weight of numbers the Germans....

David_18 made my point more eloquently than I could have.
Verdun is something of which you are completely ignorant.

The French did not fight for Polish independence, but without the slaughter fighting the Germans at places such as Verdun (in WW1, for the historically challenged) Poland wouldn't have become independent.

It is this level of fundamental ignorance that is shown whenever a Pole glosses over the enormous Western bloodshed, which as an absolutely necessary part of Poland getting independence, and concentrates solely and exclusively on the tragedy of WW2.

And if you're saying that France had a year to mobilise for WW1, then you're wrong.

I've invested heavily in Poland, for my own personal profit.
I just hope the historically-illiterate such as Belka's ex-secretary, who now passes for a Foreign Affairs minister, will stop joining in with her twittish intellectually-midget twin bosses in shouting "Boo-hoo, everybody hates us and is always stabbing us in the back!"

The basic truth is that in war there are no winners. There are no losers. There are only survivors, and one must do whatever it takes to survive.

France, the UK and Russia fought to protect themselves only in WW1 - to protect themselves against the agresive Germany. Germany only gave up because the USA came into the war. Poland, France, UK and Russia should be grateful to the USA, both in WW1 and WW2. Also lets not forget, if it wasn't for Poland, you'd all have first been speaking Mongolian(13th C), then Turkish(17th C), then Russian (1920) Ultimately, along with many international soldiers, we thank the US for our freedom.

Poland is very aware of what France and allies did for it through the ages - just look at some of the monuments around the city. There's Charles de Gaulle square with a statue
of De Gaulle for his help during the 1920 war with Russia and tributes to allied help during the war. Napoleon square which was changed to Uprisers square after the war. Poland knows what the others have done, but concentrates solely and exclusively on the tragedy of WW2 becuase of what they failed to do in 1939. France had the largest army in Europe in 1939 - it had a year to mobilize in 1939. Poland was actually not doing to badly holding off the Germans but the support never came - and time food and bullets ran out.

Way...as you can see it was as below...plus another £1.2 billion from canada!

"In 1945 Britain borrowed $4.34bn from the US consisting of a $3.75bn line of credit and a "lend-lease" loan facility of $586m. The following year the government agreed a $1.185bn line of credit loan from Canada."

The USA war effort was huge, relative to the overall Western effort.....but paltry compared to the Russian........the numbers killed back that up..........80% of all German war casualties killed by the Russians.....!

I don't think we should thank too much. War is not a charity. Any country joined or fighted they did it for their own benefits .

Bought? They fighted for themselves not Poland .....As Germany lost Poland also got free.

Iwona...there was still a huge price to pay....so you would have preferred not to have become independent?

So the tens of thousands of Irish men who voluntered to fight in WWII...did so for their own selfish ends?...indeed so did many other groups...because it was the right thing to do!!!!!

Frank,

I didn't want to sound cynical.I am not.

I don't know what is the dictionary definition for hero-war hero.
I have full respect for them as patriots fighting for independence of their countries. But their priorities are their own countries.

Maybe I was not clear iwona...these were Irishmen who fought in the British army, as they had been for generations...partly because there was no other "work" and partly because they had a yearning for "causes"...doing the right thing.

Sure some may have had other motives...but they joined individually....not a due to government pressure etc...
