hhhmmm i don't think eating you would be a good idea, i would end up like jail and everybody would liken me to Hanibal Lecter :) lol plus i'm not sure i'd like a bit of Panienka steak, i'm not sure what it would taste like!!!! :):):):)

Agreed. At 12 kids have a problem to decide what they want for dinner, let alone decide what they will do for a living the next 40 or so years. I'd say even at the age of 16 it's a tad early to make career commitments.

The current system resembles pre-WW2 one. I'm not sure what they were thinking. The 8+4/5 (or 8+2+[3]) seemed to work quite well.

yeah agree totally with that, my goodness what are they doing using pre-WW2 ideas for the modern day student?? something needs to be done here i think

In communist Poland there was a sentiment that everything pre-communist (i.e. also pre 1939) was better. Humorously, some even yearned for pre-1939 eggs in grocery stores. They couldn't get the eggs so they got the school system by the balls.

Good point out! I played 2 sports in HS rugby and football. I was the homecoming captain of the football team but high schools sports mean nothing anymore outside of high school. Some of the all county all league players we had now work at ****** jobs and drink their problems away. Some of the ones who got scholarships are doing well though. Many kids see it as a way to get $ for college. Most dont' get scholarships though.

I think people need to give their kids realistic goals. Being a famous singer actor or athlete is just so unlikely! Most who even make it that far end up having extremely short careers and alot of them don't even make that much $. People are just ridiculously optimistic in the USA its discusting. I know a few buddies who i guarantee their optimism will catch up to them. Every1 thinks if they try hard they will always be the lucky one! This is just a bunch of BS though lol. Look at the statistics not the successes lol. IF for ever 1 success there r 200000000 failures u probably won't b a success!

Holy F*ck I actually agree with you.

***feeling slightly unpleasant...

First of all I would like to thank Panienka for her insight into the system of polish schools. Second, I would like to say the US could learn some of this, but Tornado is right. What a confusing mess it seems to be in structure of polish schools. Hopefully it will reorganize over time. The 19 year old situation is an interesting argument. One might argue that this would bring about more maturity in the individual here in the US. So basically the US seems to lenient in the public sector and polish to confusing. Change in either will happen over time. It may take generations of thought o make either system better.

In Ontario it was pretty much the same where most children used to finish high school at age 19. Then they got rid of the 5th year of high school in order to save some moolah and 18 is the average age when kids finish school (unless their bday is later in the year, then they're 17). I was in the first class where they got rid of the extra grade, and I have to say that I wasn't too happy about it. I wasn't ready for anything at 18 and wouldn't have minded the extra year in high school. Now that I'm finishing Uni, I can't wait for law school because once again, I'm not ready to throw myself into the job market.

In grade 10, they introduced this new course called "Career Studies" where they made you do a bunch of useless tests and little projects to help you decide what you want to do with your life. Most 15/16 year olds don't know what they'll be doing next week, never mind 'when they grow up'. It wasn't very surprising that most students didn't take this course seriously.

Mali you are now close to the top of my list in favorites on PF . Like you care! Anyway , maybe the career study class should be to take these kids and place them all over the world to see how other countries manage . Some kind of cultural exchange program for all student and not just select ones. That last year in highschoolcould become an education of a life time.

a favourites list, don't know if its a good or a bad thing, i have people i like better than others, i think favourites are people you tend to 'favour' as in will always defend or prefer to lean towards their way of thinking.

As i say i have people who i like better than others but i would not call them my favourites.

actually mate i think this is a bad idea, the kind of things i want from my career study is, advice on job interview techniques, Building a CV, focusing on my future ideas for a career and general career advice. While it would be nice to send kids here and their its not actually very practical, so you take a child out of its usual sarroundings dump he/she into a completely different culture/way of life/thinking, there could be major trouble, what happens if the child dosen't like or want to be moved or go and isn't to keen on the new culture he/she is introduced to.

I mean really would you want to be the poor boy/girl sent to Saudi Arabia for a week to follow islamic law, yeah great field trip!!!!!. There are, at least for me, more important things for a person of 15 16 to be learning and some of them are the ones i mentioned above.

I'm not sayiing your idea is invalid mate, infact in some cases its a good idea, however i was pretty happy with the french exchange thanks very much then coming back to usual lessons and way of life :)

I a m going to make some homemade pizza dough tonight for sunday. I have to put brakes on a tractor, split firewood and I also have remodeling projects in the house. Since it is just me and my son, I will probably take hime to a movie and dinner for one night.

I was just tossing it into the wind so to speak, maybe a better curriculum would be to show the students what ways some other successful countries do their studies and their views so that the students will have a better idea of what is out there in this global economy. Japan, poland all have different ideas on education and structure. The US has a tendency not to teach anything outside the box. And I am tired of it.

thats a great idea, there is nothing wrong with showing students, dvd's, websites, journals etc etc about other countries successes in education, in fact i would promote that. It takes away the element of physically moving the pupils from place to place and maybe not liking their experience. With films, dvd's etc, they would be able to get a feel for a different, life, culture and way of teaching from another country without having to live it themselves
