To clean the dirt from there bodies. Carp like to scour the bottom of the lake for their food, so by putting the in the bath for a few days, it stops the fish tasting like dirt.

they still taste like crap, no matter of they take a bath or not. nasty fish. :(

Yes, that is a correct answer (partly). Carps grown in muddy waters might smell/taste of mud.

Yes, a few days should be enough to stop the fish tasting like dirt, however, they are also enough to start the family smell like dirt .....



I and the majority of Poles don`t agree with you. Carp is a very tasty fish. A bit fatty, but that`s what I like.

What is bathing in the fish tank and why?

Well when i first came to Poland i stayed with a girl friend and her parents in their home....Just before Christmas i was told about this fish in the bath thing , and refused to believe it...Aneta was always winding me up about life in Poland , so i thought this was another wind up...To prove it she led me up stairs , and sure enough there was the two fish in the bath....Unfortunatly i made the mistake of showing the two fish to Kuba , who is a rather beefy tomcat who lives with them ...Kuba was very interested , and after watching them for a while i picked him up , closed the bathroom door and took him downstairs....While we were all busy preparing stuff for the big meal , Kuba decided to give the fish a second look...He must have jumped up onto the door handle , and got the door open , and then despite the fish being almost as big as him he hauled one of them out of the bath , and gave it a good seeing to....Of course i got the blame for the fishes demise , but fortunatly we were able to get another fish to replace the one with the missing head.....

Karp are kept in baths so they are fresh for the dinner? as an offering to God? ha ha

actually many polish people do think it's crap. most of those have tried better variety then the bottom feeders though. move up in the world of food man. bottom is never good.

This bottom categorization of yours is a bit crappy, I am afraid.

Firstly, I have lived in this country for 40 years and seldom met a person who refused to eat carp.

Secondly, water bottom organisms belong to the most valued food. Example: lobster and oysters.

I guess it all depends on who's cooking it. I've had carp at a few different households and they were all prepared a little differently. Some were good and some weren't, but it was still good to eat.

Carp yes do taste not so good, they are quite fleshy, but their flesh does taste rotten compared with over fresh water fish.

There is a reason why Trout and Salmon are more highly valued.

I know that carp is treated as water rubbish in America. I have run into such opinions in other forums.

But Poland is different. We regularly eat all kinds of fish in our family, and frankly, if I have a choice of carp or salmon or trout, I will certainly choose carp. And the price of those fish is almost identical in Poland, with carp between cheaper trout and more expensive salmon.



That`s quite correct. It has to do with the intent of preserving the freshness of the fish, although not with God in mind. The tradition of keeping fish in the bath was strengthened in comunist times when, due to disorganised supplies or simple shortage, there were sometimes problems with getting fish for Christmas Eve. E.g., I still remember that one year a few of my class mates didn`t come to school because they had been standing in a line to the fish store till late evening or even early morning hours. Their parents told them to.

So, being a child of communism, eternally oppressed with such memories, I prefer to get my fish a day before Eve to avoid any unexpected surprises. Fish is in my bath and I feel sort of secure.




Yes. I was amused to see them like that because normally pickles are in jars or even small wooden barrels.
