but having lived and worked elsewhere and then moved to Poland I've found the level of dishonesty and lying here quite phenomenal, mainly when you have to deal with a stranger.

well i guess i really can't argue with your experiences now can i. I am curious though and i hope you won't mind my asking where you stayed. hmmm, maybe i've just come to accept things, maybe i'm the one with blinders on, hmmmm.

Some of the other threads suggest that it happens with business deals.
Yes I lost a lot of money in a business deal, I never imagined the lengths someone would go to con you and yet tell you to your face they had done nothing wrong.

I know of one unfortunate expat who's Polish business partner gave him a large pile of papers that he had to sign, as he didn't speak Polish he didn't notice that one of the papers slipped in was to relinquish his half of the business for nothing. He signed it not realising and when he came to work the next day he was barred from the building.

Having lived here for 5 years i have to agree with Wroclaw Boy, seems to me that in Poland it is seen as a weakness to admit you were wrong or say sorry and so people just lie to cover up.

this happens a lot at my uni. the international office has annyoing habit of losing handed-in work and then firmly denying having ever received it. so often has it happened during my 2 years there that the place was nicknamed 'the black hole of calcuta'. it wasn't really the fact that they lost my numerous assignment that bothered me, rather it was the their attitude - the 'they are all just silly foreigners after all' treatment and lying straight in your face. and have i ever heard a word of apologies whenever the work in question had been found? guess.
the issue was finally solved by introducing forms that need to be signed, stamped and received in 3 copies. lots of bureaucracy involved, but at least now you can shut their lying mouth with your proof.
oh, and i study in uk.

- I was born in Poland and visit the country and stay in it for long periods, and haven't seen any evidence justifying your sweeping generalisations. The behaviour of Poles in UK is also proof of their, actually, honesty and truthfulness. Many Brit employers highly value these traits in Poles. So how is it - have you made up your sweeping generalisation just to argue a bit? You know, generalisations should be backed by evidence. Have you got any, pal? I know numerous cases when Brits have lied to Poles shamelessly and conned them without mercy. Should I make sweeping pseudo-psychological and pseudo-sociological generalisations based on this fact?

I know of one unfortunate expat

- So you used this single case to base on it your sweeping generalisations about the Poles?

I wish such types as yourself didn't live in my country. And yes, if Poles are such a lying dishonest lot, why on earth you have been living 5 years in Poland?

You know, pal, you are the one here who appear to be dishonest and a liar.

seriously mate, that's a foreigner4 goes to jail for killing situation for me, how did he not end the other guy's life. I can't get it, the situation you just spelled out is a green light to end another man's days from my perspective.

Warsaw

That says a lot. I've been dealing with a lady from Warsaw for the past 2 weeks and the thing that struck me about her was how full of crap she is. I can only say that i get the distinct impression she is lying or acting each and every time we talk, and she is completely fluent in english (i mean completely)- maybe it's a warsaw thing?

The folks i'm close to are all dimes, and i'm glad i know them.

Maybe he doesn't like you...

Sorry folks but the Poles are a Nation of liars. When you have an appointment with them or any kind of transaction which involves a Pole when they realise they cannot keep their side of the bargain they lie their way out of it rather than tell the truth which is usually the best option.

Ive heard some good excuses in my time but these guys are something else and the lies are so good. Its great when you catch them out.

Of course we all lie from time to time but ive never heard so much BS from a nation since i lived here.

- Maybe it was so during communism, but today doesn't seem to be the case. I have never had any experience of this sort in new Poland. Have you, Gosiaa from sydney? If so, share it wih us, please.

Many people lie to get ahead, more important is whether the lies are white or black. I've encountered remarkable honesty here

MMM, Just reading this forum has given me second thoughts about living there, but maybe my experience will be a little different as I have a Polish wife, or maybe worse, who knows. Anyway I intend to give it a go shortly, I just need to sort out a business plan and premises for a pub, get a licence, fictures and fittings and go...

I'll keep you;s posted on how I get on, and in the meantime if anyone has any info as to Alcohol Licensing & Costs, please come back to me, or with anything that may well be of use to me..

Thanks
Marcus

Have you had your conversations with Sanepid yet? That's the first priority, and probably the first bribe you'll have to pay.

Officially it's the Health Department. In fact its a bureaucratic empire with virtually no limits on its powers. Not the only one you'll have to deal with here, I should mention.

And you believe'em??? I bet you they're lying half the time. This would mean that Poles lie about 1/4 of times.
Oh, wait - I'm a Pole too, so I've just told a half truth, which means that Poles lie about 1/8 of times!

Seems to me like the Brits have little room to talk leaving these folks out in the cold to fend for themselves against the Russians. If you are lied to consider it owed to you, but then you've mused this yourself Wroclaw Boy.

The Polish have always been a nation of liars. I was on a bus yesterday and got talking to an old man who is a close neighbour. He was telling me about life in England just after the war when they filled all the ex prisoner of war camps with Poles! There is agreement between us and that was that in many ways, Polish nastiness is genetic and inborn and is beyond the self help or control of the Poles themselves. After the end of World War 2 in England with the arrival of the Poles knife crime rose almost over night.

Thats absolute rubbish. The POW camp that my Grandfather was in, never housed poles and was turned into a farm equipment storage area when the POWs were released.
