Meaning of Carer
The words "carer" and "carers" are universally accepted in most English speaking countries to refer to the care of people with disabilities by unpaid relatives or friends. In the United States, perhaps due to the lack of a powerful user-led carers movement and the need of some professionals to assert their superiority by using technical terminology or jargon, words used include "paid caregiver/caretaker" and "caregiver". The former are generally assumed by the uninitiated to mean a paid member of staff, whereas "voluntary caregiver" is presumed to be synonymous with the universal plain English word: "carer".
