Polish Dinner Guest - should I bring vodka or wine?

I'm fortunate enough to have been invited to my co-workers home for supper.

In Canada, I would bring a bottle of wine.
In Poland, should I bring a bottle of vodka?

It really depends on what they prefer, and what will be served for the supper, but it's hard to decide if you don't know what they drink.
Generally in Poland vodka is a little "safer" especially with older people, because many people still don't drink wine (and some of them even prefer sweet wine), dry wine with the more educated (but many still like vodka), beer is rather more a barbeque thing or watching together a football (soccer) game.
If you bring some good stuff that noone likes, and your hosts have planned to serve other drinks, don't worry, they may use it another time, it's nothing wrong if they don't open it.

While traditional Polish practice is indeed to open a bottle brought by a guest right away, in the US (in my experience) the opposite has traditionally been true. Bottles brought by dinnger guests are not opened while the guest is there (unless the guest is supposed to bring drinks). I don't know about Canadian practice.

The absolute best thing would be something Canadian (if that's where you're from) but if that's not possible then I agree that vodka is safer than wine. Even better might be cognac or brandy.

In my opinion wine is better as a gift. If you bring vodka your host may think that you think about Poles stereotypical.

Be aware your guest may well have a bottle already to role, the enivitable result will be you will down shots while eating. Once their bottle is done, yours will follow. Reult....REALLY ******* DRUNK.... have fun and try not to throw up.
