My Polish girlfriend misses home...how can I help?

Hi all, this is my first post, but I've read your forums for a while now. I've always found it useful when trying to be "cute" with my polish girlfriend, but this post is on a slightly more serious note.

Lately she has been missing home a LOT. She is an Au Pair and part of her program rules is that she can't go back to Poland while she's here...which makes her feel "stuck" is how she put it.

I want to do something that might remind her of home and make her feel "close" to her roots....but I'm not sure what would really make her feel that way without possibly make her miss home MORE. I've thought about maybe cooking her an ALL-POLISH meal....but I'm a guy....I need suggestions and step by step instructions on something like that :-)

If any of you have some good ideas for me that would be GREAT!

Thanks,
~Sonicsoul

First of all, don't try to remind her of her home! That will only make things worse. Try to occupy her with something, take her out somewhere, etc… When you are busy you don’t have time for homesickness. At least that’s what I and my girlfriend tried to do when we were feeling homesick.

Show her that you are really trying to help her, try use some polish sentences like I miss you, I want to be with you in broken polish. If she is really interested with you that should be helpful. If she is not .... You should give up her and trying live without your princess. I know that is hard but this is reality, maybe now you are not a of cap of tea for her any more.

Is there some reason you think she is not interested in Sonicsoul? Based on what he wrote, I don't see any signs of disinterest on her part towards him......just that she misses home....please enlighten us with why you feel this way.

To be someone superstitious is nothing wrong, maybe I am wrong or something like that but what I am doing now is trying to help him out with solving the problem

My GF gets it too. Its inevitable.

The first XMAS she was away from home, she was crying so much that I got pictures of all her family and got them blown up so I could frame them (including one of me and her so I could remind her of how important she is to me too!)

It gets better with time, but usually the last week before she goes to Poland and the first week after she goes home, she is unbearable.

Luckily, she gets on very well with my family (well, her future in laws) so she doesn't feel so bad anymore.

Del boy, you crack me up. I was looking for ways to cheer my girlfriend up and you want me to drop her like a hot potato LOL. We are planning to get married when her program is over so I don't think that's the issue. She's 26 and I'm 28, she already calls me old, and tells me she's ready to settle down because she's not getting any younger either lol.

First Christmas.....I was thinking about that too, dannyboy. That will be hard for her for sure.

It's nice to hear from the guys in my same position - Matyjasz and dannyboy (and anyone else of course) what other issues am I going to come across that I might not have thought about? I just like hearing other peoples problems-solutions.

It's like the last page of a fairy tale "they got married and had loads of kids"...well, in your case, "loads" is not accurate, but who knows what will happen in the future...

;) Congratulations and best wishes to you two and soon three :)

Is it ok to update you one more time?

Well, we are now living in Brze¼no, Poland which is just outside of Kielce. Big change no? I guess her home sickness got the best of us :) I've only been here 6 days and it seems that I will really like it here.

Any tips for the new guy in Poland?

It depends how much money you have. If you are rich, you can go to Poland, buy a building where she used to live, demolish it carefully, brick by brick, send everything to England, reconstruct the building and let her enjoy her home.

Simple. Such thinhs have been done before, e..g, American guys did it to French castles, I suppose...
