Polish immigrants apply to be Police officers in N Ireland

Recent news report, of the 7000 applicants recieved to become police officers here, nearly 1000 of them came from Polish immigrants!!

Is it that they are very big on law and order...or attracted by the 40,000 pounds salary, including overtime....?....

There are about 30,000 Polish immigrants in N Ireland and nearly 180,000 in the south of Ireland.

Yep, one of my long lost cousins lives there (polish) but they moved there long
before this wave of immigrants.

They try to balance the police make up...to a 50:50 split.......a way of positive discrimination....because during the years of the troubles numbers of catholics went down to something like 4/5 percent.

Aconfidential report issued by the central
headquarters of the Polish police has
warned that the force could end up short of
12,000 to 16,000 officers because so many
are emigrating to the UK and Ireland,
according to the daily newspaper Dziennik.
The exact number of policemen and
women that have already moved west to
work either as officers or as security guards
in the British Isles is not as yet known, but
the demand for their services there is clear.
The Police Service of Northern Ireland is
particularly keen to recruit Poles, as are
police south of the border.
Speaking to Dziennik, Dorothy O’Leary,
spokeswoman for the Irish police, the
Garda, said, “A group of Poles have already
begun training with us and in a few months
they will become fully-fledged officers. We
are very happy to train them and make use
of the policing skills they learnt in Poland.”
The Garda are looking to employ a further
1,000 police men and women in 2007.
In Britain, Poles that have already made
the grade and donned uniforms say that
money was the major factor in persuading
them to make the move from the Polish
force. One, called Andrzej, who works for
London’s metropolitan police joked: “My
first salary was almost the same as what
I earned in Poland. The only difference was
that it was in pounds instead of zloty.”

hmmm... i have experienced polish police corruption firsthand on a number of occassions...

That's right, if you were paid so poorly and were treated by your supervisors no better than a litter bin, then small wonder that many rank and file policemen in Poland get corrupted. I hope that when they become employed in the UK or Ireland that will raise their professional and moral standards, and that Poland won't be (at least) ashamed by their actions.

I thought to be a policeman in England or ireland, you had to be naturalized British. How can someone with a Polish passport become a U.K policeman? A Pole can not even have the right to vote. To be a security guard maybe.

look around, read some posts about us here, what some people wrote here, and plz stop to tell me, we are these bad and agressive. I'm so happy that you are nice guy, but not everybody is like you for Poles I appreciate this a lot!!!! Sorry if you've met people who were attacking you witout the reason. However England wasn't always nice, sweet country.
