in your opinion no doubt. Having working in asylum centres in the UK I would have to disagree. There are two sides to everything, but personally I think that the UK is one of the more lenient countries when it comes to asylum seekers, too much so for our own good.

Not just my opinion, but also the opinions of scholars who study this type of thing. There are numerous reports that easily justify my claims.
Like I stated above, I'm not singling out the UK as this horrid place that treats foreigners like dirt because that's not what I mean at all. I'm not even saying that the UK is the worst EU country in its dealings with asylum seekers. All I'm saying is that calling the UK a 'soft touch' isn't an honest depiction of the treatment of asylum seekers.

Im not even going to bother getting in to this with you because you are very young and probably have a lovely outlook on life, but the simple truth of the matter is that 1 in 1000 are probably fleeing their country, the rest are simply after a better standard of living but are not prepared or are unable to go about it the proper way and whilst that's a shame, its a problem that their own countries should be addressing....Europe is not their to clean up the mess and take in the poor from other countries, believe it or not we have our own.

I'm 23 (almost) and becoming very pessimistic about the world. All this paper writing is making me a little depressed about the way that the poor in the world are treated (not just by the EU but by their own governments). Its always great reading about how the US sponsored an army in Haiti to get rid of a more Social government but then when all the violence in the US broke out, they suddenly want nothing to do with Haiti. Its an ugly world out there, so yeah the UK and EU should be taking care of their own at the very least.
University is making me anti-everything

thats the main problem, they have a civil war and the EU get the fall-out, governments would rather spend money on arms and corruption than feeding their own people...

It should, but old people still die of malnutrician or cold because they cant afford both....inflation is crazy in the UK yet old people have to live on a pittence.....yet some A.S can come here and live quite comfortable on benefits....thats where my problem lies..

you're saying that the asylum seeker gets the 'package' , a 3 bedroom apartment in a new council housing estate, a flash european car and higher allowance per fortnight than a British old age pensioner ? who probably owns heir own house, has other assets, has a few cars etc etc

There is so much povo people and poverty stricken countries around the world, the amount of people let in to EU countries is reallly..... hardly anything when you compare it to the billions(literrally) of starving , dirt-poor people in the 3rd world.

I do not think the governments of EU countries would suddenly want to sponsor those poor people that they usually make money off of their countries by dirty money from things such as mining in africa , and the oil all around the globe etc etc

yeah probably, thats rubbish, today they usually can't afford to keep the heating on on the winter and afford their council tax so they end up in prison!!!!!! The pension in the UK is terrible if it even exists anymore. I think you can say that asylum seekers get more than the pensioners of the UK but thats not saying much. Alhtough i did hear about the new 50inch tv's in the asylum hostels, what a joke!!!!

poor is poor, there are poor people in the UK, what i think you miss is that there is different levels of being 'poor'. Of course the 3rd world is going to be different from developed or developing nations, thats why they are called 3rd world :):)

thank god for that, most of the money given to Africa filters its way into of shore bank accounts and into the pockets of the leaders of the nations. Its amazing all the billions that has been pumped into africa over the years and yet, where is the progress???? hasn't the world realised that the money is not hitting the mark, aiding those who need it but instead being distributed amongst the rich dictators of africa.

p.s. nothing like a good old debate. Thank goodness this sort of thing has come back to the top of the pile, i was beginning to wonder what had happend to PF's debating crew
