To be an effective debater, you have to stay on the subject and answer argument w/ argument and facts that relate to the topic. Otherwise, your evasion of the topic will give the impression that you don't have valid arguments for your position and that you concede the ground to the other debater. The topic is defined by the initial speaker, not by the responses to it.
Also, since no individual, nation, or religion is perfect, admitting to their faults is not going to destroy their credibility. On the contrary, it will show maturity, even-handedness and generosity of spirit on the part of the person who is capable of doing so.
