Polish leader promises compensation

Tusk, meeting Monday at the Polish Consulate in New York with representatives of several major Jewish organizations, promised that legislation would be introduced this spring that provides some measure of compensation for confiscated property under previous authoritarian regimes.

Good for Tusk. I don't know where the money is going to come from, but this is a positive step towards healing.

i think this is a bad deal. time to move on. this will only create issues that Poland doesn't need right now. reperations are a waste of time.

It will be long story ... every gov promise to do it ... and it ends like always. Buzek wanted to do it and had been blocked by Kwasniewski. Kaczynkski wanted to give 20% and have been blocked by ... Tusk (he wanted to give different %). Now Tusk wants to give something and ... we will see.
It is not about Jews but generaly about properites confiscated by Commie regime. Bilions of PLN, for some noble families, people who had factories, generaly rich people not only Jews...

Ukrianians and Bielrussians will never pay for our properties on east. And we don't want to take it back ...

It is a bad/not fair idea, especially since poles won't get anything for the kresy, but remember were dealing with the jews. They want compensation and they will get it. I read an article in the paper here a couple of days ago about a group of jews getting $50 million compensation in belgium.

It's obvious Mr. Tusk cannot even go to WC without asking for approval from Washington.

This has nothing to do with Washington, other than the fact that Polish Jews also lost a lot of property to the communists, and many of them/their descendants now live in the U.S.

Just another unneccessary transfer of cash, in my opinion. It's no better than the current debate going on in the United States about nonsensical reperations for slavery.

I'm surprised anyone would question the need to compensate former owners of stolen property. If someone stole your wallet an he was caught by the cops, would you tell him to keep the wallet because you have a new one now? Same deal here.

give back Polish properites in Ukriane, Bielaruss, Lithuanina ... 50% of Lwow, 80% of properties in Lithuanian capital Wilno 50% of Bielrussian capital Minsk, 50% of western Ukrianie land, 40% of land in Bielruss, half of Lithuanina, 30% of Latvia 10% of Estonia...

why nobody gave compensations for destroyed Warszawa ?



after we rebuild town appear some people and tell it is their ... where thwy have been when we were rebuilding it ...

some people are so stupid, I know that Germans think that 30% of this country should belong th them, Russians want 30% as well, and Jews wants another 30% ... and 10% would stay in Polish hands ... of course we should give everything back and forget about our properties just because we should move forward ...

as to Israel they should think about compensations for Palestininans ...

I seem to recall you saying in another post that Poles have til the end of 2008 to make claim for compensation for land lost during WW2. Was this you? If so, do you have any info or links to commence this claim.

Thanks for pointing that out I should have been more clear. This is for property taken after the war on outskirts. As you can see in the articals I have submitted, Poland is not placing "Jewish" victims on the top of the list as they requested. What I am hoping is the full story be brought into 2008 with victims of "Polands people" from both "Hitler" and "Stalin" IMO the real victims.


This led to quick speculation

Tusk made it sound good but he is really moving into hot water. He is gonna create problems by having to entertain spurious claims to land. Although claimants must go through the proper channels and furnish the relevant papers, it is not sth that needs to be done

Compensation?...to 'major Jewish organizations'?...compensation for what?...has the Russian government pledged compensation to the Poles who lost properties when the NKVD came in to Poland in 1939, and allowed the Jews to seize Polish property?...did you know that some 'major Jewish Organizations' have proposed making Oswiecem an 'international area', ruled by certain 'non-governmental organizations' as opposed to the Polish government?

Who said "Jewish", they are 20% of the claims?
