polish religious pilgrims crashed coming back from a pilgrimage site in France

God bless RIP

trojmiasto.pl/wiadomosci/news.phtml?id_news=23919

GRENOBLE, France: Twenty-six Polish pilgrims were killed Sunday when a bus carrying them from a holy site in the French Alps careened off a steep mountain road, smashed into a river bank below and burst into flames, authorities said.

Sometimes it is difficult to know what to say in such circumstances.

I join the other posters by offering my sincere condolences to the families of those concerned in this tragedy.

I agree this is such an awful tragedy, and we will never understand why it happened. My heart really goes out to the family and friends affected by this. Unfortunately in instances like this words do little to comfort. And on something such as an internet forum that is all that can be given, when a hug would do better.

This is very sad and very tragic. I'm amazed that some people survived the fall and the blaze.

Very hard to find words, I did hear about it on the radio last night.

It would appear that this is not the first time there has been a fatal accident involving a bus on this stretch of road, something must be done to ensure more lives are not lost so tragically and needlessly.

Condolences are tricky on this forum.
Catholics pray for the dead, Protestants don't believe in purgatory and pray for the living relatives, Hindus wish them better luck next time and the humanists, athiests and agnostics offer empty plattitudes into the air - Take your pick.

It happened because the vehicle was using the road illegally and wasn't equipped to deal with mountains. It didn't have the permit to use the very dangerous descent.

http://news.independent.co.uk/europe/article2793099.ece

Forty-three pilgrims died in a crash on the same road in 1973, while 29 people died in a crash in 1975. Buses are prohibited from using the five-mile road without a special permit.

``We can't manage to make this descent safe,'' Jean-Jacques Defaite, the mayor of the neighboring town of Laffrey, told LCI television.

Some said the bus' speed could have been a factor in the crash. Grenoble state prosecutor Serge Samuel told France Info that four motorcyclists following the bus said it was traveling about 44 miles per hour before it crashed. Experts would verify the bus' speed, he said.

Yes, how unfortunate that the non-religious are uncomfortable offering such valuable and consoling cliches as "I'll keep them in my thoughts and prayers."

Uncomfortable? Why should they be uncomfortable about not doing something that is meaningless?

I not going to offer something that is worthless to the bereaved.

I don't pray, i'm not even religious in fact religion is the most annoying thing in the world for me, but i think anybody should be able to give condolences for the loss of life and those who will be affected

Ahh. Ok.

Unfortunately I've heard this said in all seriousness by religious types (on FOX, I believe) before.

yes, it was clunkshift who made the comment about non believers, which actually pi$$es me off, like it's only the religious who are capable of feeling compassion

Ok Daisy, your public pity is greater than my public pity, does that help any bereaved?
Is being pi$$ed off a new moral high ground?
I apologise for my inability to take part in public wailing and hand wringing.
Anything further is between me and a widely despised creator.

this is what pi$$ed me off 'empty platitudes' from where I am looking you are taking the moral high ground.. I find it offensive that you regard the geniune feelings of people who do not believe in a higher being as empty, I find that bloody offensive

I'm sorry about that outburst, I don't usually lose it like that, but he hasn't even had the decency to answer.

I offer my condolanses to they're family and friends.

Now i am an agnostic, and accidents like this really feeds my belief that there is no higher being. Why would "God" punish pilgrims that is true to him and follows him?
Guess praying did not help.

no, it's not about my feelings, don't be so condescending. Those people died needlessly and in a horrible way. Anyone with an ounce of humanity could not look at the images of that burnt out bus and not feel for the people who died that way, 3 of them were children.

I don't see the point of public anguish and words posted on a web site.
Words make no difference if they are unread so who benefits?
I see no difference between a physical rubber-necker and a virtual voyeur of tragedy.

This is why I could never add my condolences to such a thread on a Forum. It was originally posted in good faith as a thread for condolences and maybe some special words to the bereaved families. A special tribute perhaps.

Instead, it's degenerated and many seem to be arguing on it instead. I find it disrepectful :)

I'm not getting at anyone at all. Just saying, think what you are posting on this thread, that's all :(
