Miranda !!! You are just as bad as I am. Pitty I had to hurt your national pride to make you produce such a eloquent answer to Witek's nerrowminded question - I hope he read it. As for me - my english is realy bad indeed, I complated my education in 1995 since than I got merrid and my husbands affairs takes us to other language zones, so english isn't the most important for me any more.

Based on what I pay my non-Polish cleaning lady and assuming an average of 30 hours per week of cleaning, (another 10 hours for traveling between clients) her gross salary is over $65K USD. That is more than the starting salary for most four year college engineering graduates.

Luka tell me why is my question narrow minded?

i am just curious why Poles are always labourers such as cleaners, masonry or construction workers. the labour jobs pay good $$$? maybe. we Poles don't know English that well? maybe.

look at the Jews. have you seen a Jewish plumber or carpenter? why not?
Jews are over -represented in fields like medicine, banking and law. why?

To generalize, all people have the same basic “needs”: food, shelter, and clothing for survival. . The difference or gap comes to the level aspect of “wants”. The “wants” drive the career choices, education, salary, and ultimate benefits. The level of the “wants” come from life experiences and exposure of opportunities.

I find most Polish people are humble and find it perfectly acceptable and content to get by with the basics of needs. They don't find it necessary to flaunt their wealth. They would rather keep their money in the bank or invest it safely.

Giles, yet again, banking on your side of the fence! In basic (and I mean this in its most of basic forms! kkustron, You are pointing out the fact that the Jewish faith has an ability to provide the education and support network that is needed to give a proper educational system?

Back to the origional thread.... It's easy (bardzo, bardzo). Go for the available jobs. A traditional available job for a man is labour. The same is true for a woman. It has always been the case of a 'trade skill' for a man. E.g. Plumber, Electrician, brick layer etc... and the same for the woman. These skills need little qualifications. I do not want to sound sexist. I personally find that women are much more important in society than men, after all, who raise the next generation of both female's and male's?

Ashkenazi Jews or Jews of central and eastern Europe have made disproportionately large contributions to intellectual pursuits. Though they are about a quarter of a percent of the world's population, they comprise 28 percent of Nobel Prize winners in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, and Economics, and have accounted for more than half of world chess champions. In the United States, Ashkenazi Jews represent less than 2 percent of the population, but have won 40 percent of the Nobel Prizes in science awarded to U.S. citizens, and 25 percent of all Turing Awards. A significant decline in the number of Nobel Prizes awarded to Europeans and a corresponding increase in the number of prizes awarded to U.S. citizens occurred while Nazi persecution of Jews drove them from Europe during the 1930s and drastically reduced their numbers in Europe in the 1940

Not many around here (NY-NJ). These women are typically in the 40+ age group that do the cleaning; however, we do have a lot of PL people that own mason/construction/plumbing businesses in the area.

Many, but I do live in Poland though. Personally I don't believe that there are 2 and + generation poles in the US that work as cleaners.

usually the most ambitious people are the 1st generation they work 70-80 hour weeks and invest their $$$ in the stock market and real-estate and buy their homes for cash.

the 2nd and 3rd generation? some are hard working but most have a Canadian or American mentality and are lazy

you have a point there, however I wouldn't use a word "lazy" - they are just more comfortable and don't have to prove anything, also they don't have to fight for survival, as their parents did. I am much more "ambitious" in comparison to my born in Canada cousins and sometimes it causes missunderstadings and conflicts. I am also more resilient due to hardship, although I don't know if that's good sometimes.
