strzyga:
prosty jak metr sznurka w kieszeni

wasn't it "prosty jak metr drutu w kieszeni"? (straight - or simple/easy - like a meter of wire in a pocket)

The only version I'm familiar with is 'prosty jak kilo drutu' (straight/simple like a kilo of wire) ;)

hehe... what makes it even stranger is the fact that we seem to have grown up in the same part of Poland! :P
I guess this idiom changes with every 50 km (so there are probably hundreds of variations all over Poland ;))

Noc Świętojańska (or Noc Kupały) - St. John's Night

why St. John? No idea, cuz this night is an old Slavic, hence pagan, celebration and has nothing to do with saints, but that's the translation I've found on the net

Noc Kupały is pagan, while Noc Świętojańska is Christian (and why St. John? Because the 24th June is a name day of Jan/John in the Catholic calendar)
