Places to live in Melbourne...

Can anyone suggest the best areas to live in Melbourne? I'm shortly moving down there... ahem Sobieski ahem ;)

what are you looking for?

renting by yourself or with others?

how far out do you want to live?

you prefer a more snobby scene (south) or an alt scene (norf)?

im no big fan of south side and if i was giving advice id suggest innercity places like richmond, carlton, fitzroy.

if you prefer city locale then maybe south melbourne or east melbourne.

all these options are going to be very $$$$ though but you dont want to be too far out.

Flemington - You get to experiance the best of culture by living in close proximity to the famous horseracing, whilst at the same time having a cosmopolitan vibe that can rub-off on you in the supermarket, on a tram or in the park.

Ok guys, well I'm only around for 10 months or so so want to experience the ''real'' Melbourne..

I'm aiming for Fitzroy at the moment and I'll be commuting everyday out of town. I guess I want a good vibe (not too suburban) but leafy and green and multi-cultural, with more of a day buzz than a night time party atmosphere... I'll be studying.

Good transportation links are imperative and not too near busy roads... somewhere you can cycle and with a good street scene... (am I really fussy??)

What I'm saying is I want a good experience, but I've lived in dumps before - but obviously as long as it's safe, it can be somewhat lively??

I want diverse and arty, NOT yuppy. I'm not married with children... ;)

And I want to get on these funny things...

edit: oh, and I'll likely be renting with others.

im guessing you're either studying at rmit/la trobe?

is that where you are commuting?

fitzroy is far from multicultural or leafy and green but is diverse and arty and well serviced by pt.

also a good place to use as a base. plus only 15-20 min walk into the city.

you obviously been on gumtree to check prices and the like?

i take that back, there is a train line that runs up there but obviously no idea how close to where you're going.

and just remember no one travels to broady, everyone is travelling out of there.

Have decided on one of the areas on the train line going to Broady... so I can make a quick get away if things get rough... ;) Any suggestions? Flemington?? To be honest I'll probably just decide when I get there. Decisions come at an instant when you have all the information necessary... Any idea how long that trip would take? From the centre to Broady? Cheers.

I'd highly recommend suburbs north of the city. Like Fitzroy North, Brunswick East, Brunswick, Carlton and Carlton North. All are very lovely, green with trees abound, only 15-25 minutes to the city, and there lot's of good stuff happening in those areas, (venues, pubs, cafes, restaurants etc). Brunswick East and Brunswick would definitely be your cheapest out of those as well (and not implying the least desired and lovely by any means), however you can definitely stumble upon something nice and reasonably affordable in the other areas also, just requires more patience and work I guess.

Good luck with deciding and I hope you have a great time in Melbourne! (It's a fantastic place!)

if you're looking for decent factory outlets then head north to smith street. bridge rd used to be the ****, bit now its just chains saying they're factory outlets but charging the same as myer/david jones.

another bikie?? there are paths along the yarra and through carlton that i know of. you could always join the lyrca throng on saturday morning for the ride to mornington and back.

you can take a ferry from st kilda to williamstown. or get real adventurous and get the portsea to port arlington ferry.

not a big fan of halaal meat, so dont know much about kebabs. i prefer the lamb souvlaki's but the turkish bread, unfortunately they will never come together.

you dont need oil heaters in melbourne ;)

comedy festival coming up in april if thats your thing. most street festivals happen during the warmer months.

geelong cats, best afl team to support. but im guessing you seem more a magpies type!!!

i never get citylink so got no idea.

i think its a weakness of our public transport system as a whole. try hoddle st/punt rd at anytime. awful.

im shocked that places like doncaster, templestowe, donvale have no train station nearby.

where i live its not too bad, 2 tram lines and a train line. but the further out you're the further you're farked.

Yeah, I've noticed the lycra parade on Saturdays... They look a little intimidating...
I just muck around on bikes to get from A to B, but maybe if I wanted to take myself *really* seriously...

I'm right near the Etihad stadium so I've *practically* seen a game already... is that meant to be an insult...? ;) (This is the part where my cultural ignorance of Melbourne is to my detriment...)

Be nice! I mean we've got guys in short shorts in Sydney but they're usually heading out to Oxford Street! ;)

Anyways, I'm pretty much sorted... but any further insights or tid-bits of information will be warmly received.

So how many citizens does Melbourne have exactly? I've read somewhere about 90.000, but I thought it was a much bigger city? If that's true, then Melbourne isn't that much of a bigger city than a city like Alkmaar? :)
