Hey there,

I am really missing the taste of kawa Inka zbozowa. Does anyone know where I can buy it?
I tried various Australian versions but it's not the same at all...

Cheers,
Magdaski

I'm from Geelong & I'm Polish. I would love to meet more Polish people. Where would be the best place to go?

Hi there,

What age group are you in? Are you after older or younger people to hang out with?

Cheers

read through the threads, there are polish dziupla's (dances) at least once a month and i am sure there are youth groups for young poles in general communities.

where do you live?

so are these dziupla dances the most common (and only) way of catching up with poles in the Melbourne area's?

How many younger people attend these dances compared to the older groups? My parents used to attend some organised polish functions similar to the dziupla ones I believe but I never attended as I thought they were only for the older generation.

it was mixed when i went, there were some older creepy types and also some younger one.

my parents also used to go to them...i got dragged when i was young (on a new years from memory). ahh watching the oldies really get into the chicken dance.

HA! oh my... too funny! (memories of the chicken dance coming back)

I live in Ormond, down in the south-east (near caufield) so anything north, south or east is fine with me. the west is a no-go zone for me, but if i have to make a trip out there i will.

i think the closest polish club for me would be rowville, so i might drop in for a meal and say g'day.

this is mainly for my wife as she has only been in oz just over a year now so im looking at taking her to some polish events and to meet some other polish folk. we are off to poland in 2 weeks but i think dziupla is holding a disco late september so we will be up for that.

thanks for the info. much appreciated. might see you on the dance floor busting those 'chicken dance' moves like the good ol days

yeah, the closest would be rowville. they usually the older stalwarts at these clubs, not much youth.

there is also a polish hybrid restaurant on chapel st, windsor. it is called borsch, vodka, tears.

there is a polish festival in melbourne in november as well:

Re: meeting Polish people - it's difficult to meet Polish people in Melbourne unless you get introduced, in my experience! People hang out in their own groups, which is natural of course.. perhaps on line is a better option?

the dances in Rowville Syrena Polish house do cater to the older crowd.. and yes the older crowd CAN be sleazy! they are usually based on events like new years eve, mothers day etc

every couple of months Syrena also hold a "Polish Fair" which is great as you can shop for Polish produce, enjoy some live entertainment and eat the yummiest placki ziemniaczane!!!

i went to one of the Dziupla events years ago and found it is definitely geared to the younger crowd!

the Borsch Vodka and Tears - is way over priced and you really don't get much for your money, (for example: 6 pierogi will set you back like $20!!!!) however if you are after atmosphere it has a very nice interior and a very large seletion of vodkas.. if you want a good Polish feed try the Polish house in Rowville or the one in Albion.. both provide good servings of yummy Polish food ;-).. The one in Rowville only serves lunches on Sunday afternoons, i think it's about the same for the one in Albion..

any one based in the east, the best polish deli in melbourne is in my opinion Uncle's Deli in dandenong.. ;-) There is a relatively new one in Boronia, but i still consider Uncle's superior, by far..

Voj : There is a Polish restaurant called After the Tears at 9B Gordon St, Elsternwick; Phone: (03) 9523 0969; it is attached to the Cinemas across the road from Elsternwick station I think it is run by the same crowd as Borsch Vodka and Tears - a bit on the expensive side.

MSK: thanks for that - I've been there already and you're right: it's a bit expensive.

try this site, but the people may not be in your age range:

www.dziuplamelbourne.com

there are also monthly (sometimes once every 2 months) polish dances, but it would be hard meeting new people there. but you never know.
