How to import my car to Australia from Poland?

Hi there
Me and my fionce we want to bring our stuff to Australia, one of those things is a car, We have checked that car as we got (Chrysler Pt cruiser -2001-73000km- RHD) will cost in OZ between 11- 15 grand, so with our budget it will a litte to much to spend for a car on the beginning. So we have the valuation of shipping from Poland to for 2000$, this will be a container 20. It will go with other our personal things. Can someone please tell us is this possible to import a car to Australia, and how much will this cost??? What kind of paper work we need to do with this. We will be very gratefull for all Your help. We are going to Perth on end of March 2010, and we have a 1year student visa for the beginning, but we want to do some 2 years more study over there.

It doesn't really matter how many kms the car has, it's already 9 yrs old car and made for use in Europe & for cold climate - that's a big difference if compering the price between car made for Australian market or for any other colder part of the world.

I've looked into this also and it really doesn't seem worth it, I got a quote from a UK based company to ship the car from Southampton to Sydney for 700 GBP. If your car is UK registered the easiest thing to do would be to put 12 months tax and MOT on it and obtain a Carnet du Passage from the RAC in the UK, This would costs around 500 GBP all in and allows you to drive the car in Aus on UK plates for up to 12 months which means you don't have to mess around with getting rego and the like when you get there with the vehicle. Apparently to register a eu spec car in Aus can take weeks or months and the import duty is nearly 50% of the cars value. You need to pay 400 aud when the vehicle arrives in the country for cleaning and sterilising etc.

I was told BMW, Mercedes, Porsche, and the japanese cars are the easiest to get registered but i really have no idea about the US brands.

If the car means that much to you then take it but if not sell it in the UK and buy yourselves a nice soft top to enjoy the Aussie weather Thats what i'll be doing :)

yeah, that will be great, but we have allready registered the car in Poland...
cose we thought we will stay in Poland after being in UK for 7years, we came back Home, and here- local and main gov. dont want you to invest your money and make new work places... they only want your money... so we decided to go Down Under ;))
the sunny place ;))

yeah, that will be great, but we have allready registered the car in Poland...

I have no idea how you do it from polish registration, Only from the UK. I guess everything will need to be translated to English

you can buy the pt cruisers here.

you're better off selling the car, and either buying one in australia or living in the innercity and using public transport.

More details about importing into AU a second hand car by tourist or temporary residents.

"As a tourist or temporary resident, you may bring a road vehicle to Australia for a period of up to 12 months without payment of duty and taxes, provided a VIA is obtained prior to your importation......"

I wish it was that easy for me, I've tried to register several cars here and the people in the registration office treat me like the antichrist so I gave up.

I'll be in Sydney from April and really can't wait, Regarding getting a car if you are going in on a 457 business visa which I am you can always sell your car here and buy another the same when you get there on finance etc or even go down the novated lease route which looks to be a good way.

Anyway good luck with your trip and i'm sure like every other expat over there you won't regret it :)

when you get to perth dont trust noongars theres lots of them around perth they always stink and hanging around looking bored they like to drink in parks and abuse other people walking past another thing there police they hell strickt they like to pull cars over and search them for weapons drugs stolen property theres this new stupid law comeing up that there cops can stop you on there street and search you for weapons for no reason

I am living in Australia, and am going to Poland for a holiday to catch up with friends and family in August. Its been a while. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knows about the importing costs of bringing a car from Poland to Australia. I am looking at a getting an Audi or Merc, and was wondering if anyone knew of some good dealers in Warszawa or Krakow. Can you post their websites in this thread.

sydney, melbourne, adelaide are from over populated when compared to major cities around the world.

perth may have less humidity, but the 35+ degrees at 8am are killers.

I looked at doing this as i'm moving to Sydney in 2 weeks but it seems too much of a ballache for it to be worthwhille, The import duty is crazy over there as is the registration process.

If you go down the carnet du passage route the car has to leave Australia before the Carnet expires and you can't register it in Aus.

The best place to ask would be www.pomsinoz.com as theres quite a few knowledgable people on there who've actually done this.

I think the general concensus is that unless the car really is something special theres no point in exporting it.

Also if you decide to import it to Aus permanently you MUST have owned the car for more than 12 months otherwise its seen as a commercial import and the GST is much higher.

Unless the car is something like a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or a Japanese model the chances are it won't be able to reach Aussie compliance without loads of work and if its French just forget it.

Thats probably worth importing though but you must have owned it for 12 months prior to importing, Post on pomsinoz.com mate as theres really loads of people who have experience of doing this. If you find a solution let me know as I really want to do the same, BTW don't get the new shape 7 series they are hideous compared to the sleek and stylish e38's.

I'm an Aussie, and know for a certainty that importing a car to Australia is very easy. The hard, and costly part is getting it from the port to the open road.

This is a brilliant website i found for those who are considering it (unfortunately i can't put the link in, so i am making reference to it so you know it is not my work) , it is importing from UK to Melbourne, Victoria but is a very accurate guide for those going to other states. I will add here that the different states cost different amounts but this guide is a great ball park figure. New South Wales (NSW) is the most strict and expensive state for "car" things, e.g, licence, rego, fines, etc. The State Government's to blame, and the're still going on about making the roads safer, i'm sure by 2020 they will have us NSW citizens going around in horse and cart again. But that's for another forum.
