twice, each time around an hour or two, this is how long it takes for the ferry to re-pack, change passengers and start back to Poland. does it count? ;)

haven't seen any bike around the ferry though. ;)

I don't know about Norway and Swedem. I believe it's a bit expensive. But Finland has some marvellous sheds. The dark wood they use, and their rustic, idiosyncratic charm is almost enough to make me want to go there.

of great interest to donkeys of course...

Sweden and Norway have never really interested me, Iceland on the other hand. Not been but I think its a place I would be making plans to see in the next couple of years.

Lived in Stockholm for about 6 months, give or take. Lovely place shame it was so expensive and the people were mainly tuned into mig.fm. Nonetheless had an enjoyable stay. :)

I knew a man who went to Sweden for six months. He was hoping to meet a tall blonde Swedish lady.
He met a short brunette.
He returned to the UK with a stolen bicycle.

One have to be a rich Pole to come to Norway or Sweden , Sweden is not as bad as Norway ,but both countries are very expensive. Bring as much food and drinks as you can if going to any of these countries. Alcohol is ridulously expensive. In Norway a bottle of "cheap" vodka is about 125PLN ,in Sweden its about 100PLN.
A Bottle of Dworek vodka in Norway is 150PLN!!

Hejsan!
Ja, jag har varit tvaa gaanger i Sverige, i Goteborg och i Boraas. Goteborg ar en absolut vacker stad.

Unfortunately though, I'll have to continue in English (or Polish), as this is PF.
I've never been to Ystad, although of course I've heard of it.
Next on my trip though is Stockholm, 'Staden paa vattnet'! (Miasto na jeziorze).

Hej daa!

Can't really get an idea of why people speak so much about Sweden.
Sweden has and is nothing, compared to the other Scandinavian nations.
Originally, Sweden didn't even have connection to the sea westwards, and Scania with its surroundings never ought to be described as Swedish territory.

Porta > That's why, our stores is crowded constantly by desperate Swedes, who load their wagons and whole tourist busses with our spirits. Norwegians come here as well, but it's much easier for the Scanians to do so.

Sweden is a great country (like many others)
Great persons came from there.
The Nobel prize is named after the Swedish Alfred Nobel.
The Celsius degree system comes from a Swede called Anders Celsius.
What about ABBA, Eagle Eye Cherry, Europe, The Hives, etc.
Beautiful girls. Good national football team...
Viking (Rûs, Varegues) descents.
King Zygmunt III Vasa.

Hej, Dan88Swe!

And now (Forum Rules) in English. I loved Sweden; its cooking, its landscapes, culture etc. and was forewarned that most of them spoke English. I was disappointed (besviket) though that their English wasn't better than it actually was. Gosh, even educated Poles often speak better English (more classically correct, that is!) - -:) I found it immeasurably more practical and enjoyable to speak Swedish, rather than English, with them.

Hi! Marek
Yes I think youīr correct, we always want to be so great, and show off our language-knowledge, but unfortunately weīr not that good I think.
I live right now in Lund, south of Borås you can say. I am from Laholm, north of Borås. This city much bigger, but also itīs compact. And if you will complain thats ok :) I hope you understand. Your welcome to ask anything.

Go' mor'ron, Dan Gunnarsson!
Appreciate your prompt reply as well as your e-mail (which I just answered!) No, your English seems about par for the course, at least for most Swedes whom I've met during my sojourns (uppehaal) to Sweden, not to mention those whom I've also met abroad. No understanding difficulties I can see thus far.

Hope to be in touch again soon!

I don't agree with that. I found many more Swedes speak English than they do in Poland. In Poland more people under 40 speak more English, but in Sweden even older people know it.

Yeah! i think youīr right there, itīs most truly because they are sending english Television at most and many people even just are learning because they will travel abroad and such things. I donīt know about english in Poland, but I donīt think thatīs that usual.

Well, if you wonder anything, just ask.

Dan,

When I was in Poland, round about 1997, I didn't even try to speak English, even German was a long shot! True, when I was in Sweden, as I just finished telling Krysia, everybody and his grandmother wanted to practice their English with me!

Honestly, from the point of view of 'practicing' English, I've no problems in speaking English in countries, even where I speak the language fluently, e.g. Scandinavia, Germany, Austria, Spain, Poland etc. My problem is in Northern Europe particularly, when people occasionally ignore the distinction between merely 'practicing' vs. actually 'speaking' a language, in this case English!

If a Swede, young or old, responds to my Swedish in English (which never really happened, I must admit), I will respond, "Oh, would you like to practice your English?" For what then is the difference between me 'practicing' my Swedish and a Swede practicing his/her English??

Me again.
So you mean that you can speak swedish, then you think we will respond in english, no I donīt think that gonna happen, sorry, we are really addicted to our own language, so if you speak swedish, we will respond in swedish. Thatīs not strange is it? But you should try to speak english first, then we will respond in english and there you go, you can be the teacher, hehe. So just tell that youīre trying to speak swedish, and maybe some nice person will learn you the swedish language.

Swedes addicted to Swedish?

Ever heard the lyrics of Swedish pop groups?
I hear Polish bands singing po polsku, the French rapping en Francais, even Welsh groups singing in Cymraeg, but so many Swedes singing in English. Jens Lekman writes some fantastic English lyrics, and we all love ABBA, don't we?

haha, yes youīre right osiol, in that way we seems to love the english language.
But there is also many bands/artists that has been really big abroad, so I think thats why we are singing in english (at most). In fact for us swedish persons, there is a lot of artists that sing our own language. I think itīs harder to be understood and get many fans etc. if youīre singing swedish. And yes here is a lot of SAAB:s, Iīm not that into car:s though. I thought that BMW and Mercedes was more expensive and symbolized more status.

Osiol,

You're doubtless referring to 'Abba' and other 60's rock groups, correct? While that's true, Dan's also right in saying that the Swedish language as a legitimate vehicle for linguistic expression, even in an English-dominated industry such as music, is making a comeback!

I was to Sweden twice in the early 90's, but if I start posting my thoughts and impressions, it may come out too close to Michal's rants about Poland 20 years ago, so I just say I didn't like the country/people at all :(

Krzysztof,

The Swedes, unlike the Poles, take a longer period of 'warming up to'! They are not often given to spontaneous outbursts of either affection or outrage. Witness the old joke about the Finn and the Swede playing chess, sitting for many hours in frozen silence; looking at one another, finally one of them breaks the ice:

Finn: Sven-Aake. It's your move.

Swede: (slamming his fist on the table) Do you want to talk, or play chess!!!

I found Swedish people really cool. I noticed that in Sweden they are more open to new ideas than in Poland, the catholic religion doesn't rule there and they are more open minded with a relaxed sense of feeling. They do not stare at you if you are dressed differently while in Poland some women will stare you down and criticize your clothes, your hair.
