Baby boy born with no eyes will need €300,000 for vital treatment

THE parents of a little boy born without eyes have launched a desperate plea to help raise €300,000 for his treatment.

Jacob Nowak suffers from an exceptionally rare condition whereby his eyes never formed in their sockets before his birth.

The condition, anophthalmia, affects fewer than one in 100,000 children but, in Jacob's case, it left the him without eyeballs or optic nerves.

The Baby Jacob Trust account is at AIB: number 06553035; sort code 93-61-54. For international transfers IBAN: IE40AIBK 93615406553035 SWIFT: AIBKIE2D.

300,000 Euro is too much to be collected.
Many people are killing each others around the world for that amount of money.

If 60,000 people donated the price of a pint here, the child would be able to have the neccessary operation.

Theres an estimated 200,000 plus polish citizens resident in the irish state.

Wont the Irish health service foot the bill? or contribute?

I expected a tag line at the end other than what was there myself.

I'll check out the bank details make sure its not RN's account and sort something out a bit later.

I am not too sure about that. I think the childer has to go abroad for the treatment. Its an extremely rare condition. They will cover the after care, alright.

I watched the father on the news when I was in the boozer earlier on. I thought it was a good cause.

€300k and he won't be able to see?

It's strange that he needs to go to Germany for treatment. If it's not available in Ireland, shouldn't the Irish govt pay for as part of public health care? How does that normally work when the procedure isn't available in Ireland?

if the government pays, it contradicts its own system and it creates double-standardism. there are many many people dying cause of lack of a few tousands of euros only.

Took the words out of my mouth but hey man, the little chap will develop very strangely if the eye sockets dont have something to prevent them caving in on themselves. Who knows he may be the next Frederick Chopin, and any great conposer wants a fit wife whether he can see her or not.

Given current technology... Who is to say in a few years, they won't be able to correct his condition?

Either way, my heart goes out to him.

In a case like this you have to wonder if the mother was drinking, or smoking during pregnancy. Something to hinder the development of her baby child, maybe a bender in the very early stages of pregnancy.

Perhaps the father was enjoying Irish hospitality too much.

Could be. We may never know....

What causes anophthalmia and microphthalmia?
Causes of these conditions may include genetic mutations and abnormal chromosomes. Researchers also believe that environmental factors, such as exposure to X-rays, chemicals, drugs, pesticides, toxins, radiation, or viruses, increase the risk of anophthalmia and microphthalmia, but research is not conclusive. Sometimes the cause in an individual patient cannot be determined

Put it this way if something was wrong with my baby, i'd be tracing every single step leading upto pregnancy.

As it was when we were planning and i watched everything i did, no smoking, keeping fit lots, no drinking and eating very healthy.

But sh*t happens, and it could be your actions now that will affect your baby 5 or 10 years down the line. Mutations are a b*tch.

But as far as the treatment, 300k seems really pricey. Especially considering how many people you could treat against going blind from Onchocerciasis....hell, Merck even gives the drugs away, it's just a matter of testing and distributing..

Im not talking about gentic codes passed onto offspring, im raising the point of outside influences ie. alchohol, drugs or general life style habits affecting the so called normal genetic code being tainted. Did you not know its dangerous to drink whilst pregnant? or that many outside factors effect a mans sperm?

WB shakes his head in disgust whilst posting.

Those parents don't look like alcoholics or drug users. Why would you even suggest that?

I dont know Ol Jacob senior looks like he could down a few pints. He didnt get that accent from Tesco's. Im not stating, suggesting or anything, all im saying is that sometimes a handicapped child can be the fault of the parents from doing something their not supposed to when trying for a baby.
