You have to look at the bigger picture with the music though Sid - not just the last 15 years or so!

IMO England really excels at two particular type of comedy - the surreal (From Goons & Python via young ones & Not the Nine O'clock News right through to Spaced & Peep show) & the grotesque/cringeworthy (Alf Garnet through Basil Fawlty & Rigby to Alan Partridge & David Brent)

You're quite right about British culture generally in the last half of the 20th C, but my point is that it's moving elsewhere at the moment. I still think the comedy monopoly will remain British though. We also make excellent documentaries, and the BBC is a fine institution that invests a lot into pretty much every type of media possible, so it's not going to die anytime soon.

I completely agree with what you say about comedy too, we have a great comic tradition (in addition to Python; Nt9ocN, Peep Show and Alan Partridge are personal favourites).

Blackadder, a small gem, a bit sentimental.

Don't understand this - are you maybe referring to series 4, the one set during WW1? If so, there was a certian poignancy to the end, yes, but in general Blackadder wasn't sentimental at all really?!

Benny Hill, hm... more like German...

Personally, I hated it. He probably had as many critics as fans and I can understand the German comparison. Still, for basic slapstick even if it isn't at all clever, the English still managed to create almost a blueprint with Benny!

Geez, I didn't even know there'd been a whole series. Now I checked, I was referring to Blackadder's Christmas Carol, TV film from 1988. Thanks for this little bit of education.

That's true, mister. Stupid as it was, it had that something, only it's not my genre.

This having said... Flip&Flap I watch smiling, not sneering...
