I'm sitting here watching Sky news blether on about severe weather in the UK, snow etc.

Severe for whom? And compared to what?

Every time i see footage of cars sliding over the ice and snow in the UK, I just wonder don't people use snow tires at home?

The conditions in the UK are par for the course for the majority of Northern Europe.
The UK such a developed nation seems to lose the plot when a little snow falls, it is rather embarrassing.

I don't think it is embarassing - as far as I know some last 20 years have seen very mild winters with just some occasional snow - I spent two winters in England - in both cases there was just one snow episode during the whole season - each lasted a couple of days - It is pretty difficult then to get used to it - the drivers cannot practice driving on snow for the most part so they are caught by surprise - then mild winters also meant people never considered buying winter tyres - now again it seems winters are again getting colder and snowier in England - after a couple of such winters I believe drivers' attitudes towards winter tyres and their abilities to cope with snow cover on roads will change dramatically - so will most probably the road maintanance policies

Be afraid, be very afraid ;) ;)

You must remember that it's a relative thing, Maybe. In Poland, I've experienced -28 as opposed to the -10 being reported in the UK. OK, -18.6 in part of Wales now but they just need to brace themselves for the Siberian drift. Perhaps it was targetted more at old people so that they can make provisions.

Gumishu is right. The UK has temperate weather, so isn't geared up to much snow or heatwaves. So the effects of weather that might me normal in Poland or Spain, are intensified.

An easy comparison is south-east Saudi Arabia - it hardly ever rains, so when it actually does, they anounce it on a TV newsflash, there's always some sort of flooding on the roads (no need for ditches or storm drains) and parents keep their kids off school.

'Extreme weather warning', in my mind means Tsunami, -50C, +45C, etc not snow fall.
Although it is slightly more plausible than 'leaves on the line'.....
to me it is just Sky hyping the hyperb[o]le.

Well, extreme terror alert means an imminent threat and not mild, fabricated nonsense ;) ;)

They are just sensationalists at Sky News.

looks like Switzerland ;)

there was no snow yesterday here - today I woke up to see some 15 cm cover and it is still snowing

there is gonna be a reprise on Thursday - I wouldn't be surprised to see some 50cm of snow in the aftermath

What about if you have a proper weather watch promoted by your own government in your area????? Don't you have a one?

Like in Australia we have a real weather watch while checking all of the satellites , not news channels?!!:
