Fish and chips - do Polish people in the UK like this?

Seanus: Dolphin, Dont think I have. There are a couple of Ashvales on the A96 route. Seanus: Harry Ramsdens Dont rate it at all - and its overpriced. Seanus: chipper I call it a "chipper" too but it seems that further south its called a "chippy". This is putting me in the mood for a White Pudding supper.

Harry Ramsdens is not as good as many others but it's a decent introduction to fish&chips. A chipper is what we tend to call it too but I sometimes lapse into chippie. White pudding? Now that is just lowering the tone. It's vile!

In Aberdeen alone, we have Harry Ramsdens, the Ashvale and the Dolphin. They are all award-winning chippies I think. Many places like the Bluebird, the Byron etc etc are great.

Oho, I can chip in here.

Harry Ramsdens is closed now, Willie Miller's company owned it and it went into administration. Can't say I missed the place, though.

Ashvale - no. NO. NO NO NO. The Great Western Road one is allright, but the others are franchises and are diabolically crap.

Dolphin - yes. YES. Everything they do is wonderful.

Bluebird...on King Street? If so, not a bad one either.

Byron - you brave man!

There's a new-ish place opened up on Stonehaven beach that's absolutely incredible and beats even the Bervie Chipper into 2nd place...next time you're back, pay a wee visit, you won't regret it :)

Aberdeen chippers aren't too bad really, especially compared to Glasgwegian ones, yuck :(

Going a wee bit further afield, there's not a bad chipper in Keith's Mid Street, and there used to be a really nice chipper in Ballater too, but it got turned into a tea and crumpets cafe for tourists. Zanres in Peterhead/Mintlaw used to be decent too, but went way downhill in recent years.

The place the guy Hass owns in Holburn is a bloody good chipper too.

Remember they have fried fish here in Poland, as hard as leather and fried so long there's no flavour left. And chips here means frozen chips. So British Fish n' Chips is a revelation. As for Aberdeen, I once had some lovely fish and chips there, just off Union Street, not far from a market.

Delph, the Ashvale on GWR is the only one I've been to and it really does a mean fish and chips. The Bluebird just off King Street, yeah. I was a student at Merkland for 3 years and the chipper was on Urqhuart Road. Zanres in Mintlaw, top place. I went there after watching a Strongman contest at Aden Park. Woodend has some good stuff, I used to go there after swimming.

Jonni, what market? I'm trying to imagine a chipper near the main market.

Shelley, I was just trying to claim we had a big-name chipper :) It was no great shakes and was just advertised well. Willie Miller mishandled it. If it were priced reasonably, it would've been a good eatery.

I think you mean the Dolphin on Little Chapel St. The baker is nearer Rose St, just off Holburn junction (Chalmers I think). At the opposite end of Castlegate, right? There's a Subway near Harlaw Academy too :)

That sounds right. To be honest it was a while ago since I was last there. I remember the bakers best, not least for the butteries :-)

Good man! Butteries are great too. Do you prefer the puffy or the crispy ones? I'm glad in a way to be away from those as I'd be a roly-poly :( Fish and chips is best when tipsy and not drunk. I've seen many guys drop perfectly good pieces of fish when tanked up and it's a sad sight. I used to love jumbo sausage suppers as I never gained weight as a kid. How time changes things :(

old time english. when i was a lad one went to the chippy to buy a 'paper'. a paper being the standard talk for fish 'n' chips, which was wrapped in newspaper. i also remember folk complaining when the law changed and newspaper could no longer be used. how would one convince Poles to eat pies. the pie doesn't exist here. mushy peas... yummy

Now you're talkin, Wrocław. Pies up north are the stuff of legends. Good to see that the English love them too. Ah, the newspaper. That was back in the 80's in Scotland. Mushy peas? Brilliant too. Do you have chips in cheese or curry sauce? That's a wacky Scottish idea but one that we honour.

I remember being in OK (Yorks) with Polish visitors who time and time again wanted to eat pie and peas. Or Fish Butty with Curry Sauce.

Seanus: Do you have chips in cheese or curry sauce? often curry sauce. when i'm in the uk, that is. the best cheese fries or chilli-cheese-fries i had came from Ed's Diner in London. the cheese was a thick sauce with the look of custard

You are tormenting me now, Wrocław ;) ;) Yeah, you can find a weaker substitute in dips for tortillas. When it was PLUS, they had their own brand called Clarky's and they did a mean cheese sauce dip.

Curry sauce, what a brilliant idea for chips :) Chili is the icing on the cake.

There was a brand of squeeze cheese back home in an orange bottle. Heavenly when added to burgers too.

I think I'll have some fish and chips when I go back for Xmas.

Ajb, sexy chips :) :) After a few too many portions, I wonder if sexy would be the right adjective. Still, a nice touch :)

You can get Fish and Chips in TGI Fridays in Warsaw. I dont know if its nice, I didnt order it, but it was on the menu iirc.

It sounds like a commercial thing which would flop in places which value their local offerings. Never underestimate the quality of local producers :) Polish people in the UK, do they like fish and chips?

I just finished eating 'fish n chips' at "Corcorans" a semi-Irish bar across from "Second City" comedy club (Chicago). I like the concept. Of course I had two glasses of Margaritas with it which made the chips (fries) go down better. I like the concept....

Ironside: why don't you try it yourself I just might do that.....i suspect that in Poland the fish and chips will be much healthier tho....and not have that same heart attack inducing quality that UK food has....?
