Well - in Poland at least, the problem is that the public universities are running all sorts of absurd things - like "Albanski filogia". Sure, there's a need for what, maybe 5-10 people every year to graduate from this in Poland? But beyond that, it's just a waste of cash.

They were going to close the Polish section of Glasgow Slavonic dept for the same reason... and it was the only place in UK where you could do a degree in Polish. But considering recent events in the Blakans, perhaps Albanian is useful in some niche areas.

delphiandomine:
I'm convinced however, that in Poland - universities are being used to cover up the lack of jobs for young people.

Undoubtedly. It has been the same in UK for years.

and slapping them with a graduate tax as well?

Problem with that is people don't know what they'll be paying until after they graduate and is unfair on graduates with high incomes as they would be charged much more than the cost of their university education.

Also, people can escape paying it back by moving abroad.

I reckon so, especially with Bologna coming more to the fore.

out of curiosity, does the graduate tax only apply to UK grads?

It's not often I use the word scum but the Herald moved right up to the border of that word when sensationalising. The News of the World should serve as an example of just how vile some cretins are when going after money.

I wonder what David would make of the above links?

Let's face it the Scots hate the English more than they do some Eastern European...We even have to pay to study at their unis whilst every man and is dog can get in for nowt! As long as you're not English!

Part of the 1707 agreement, I believe :) I've met many decent English folk. Take people as you find them.

We have to pay to study at your universities too, you know ;) I should know!

(actually - we have to pay too, it's just that our fees are paid for us via a grant, subject to quite strict funding rules - it's not like it's truly free like in Poland or other countries - so you can't arse around)

It's an utter disgrace and the cretins should be exiled to England.

Slagging off English sports teams and deliberately supporting the opposing team is fine and well - but it should never, ever, ever, ever turn nasty.

If 6000 Scots moved to your city, what do you think would happen?

as far as I know some 30 000 thousand Vietnamese moved in somewhere in the vicinity of Bielsko-Biała and nothing happened - seems simply like Poles took up the jobs the Scottish low-lifes were attracted to from time to time - now their unemployment benefits are ending - and it's of course no fault of theirs they are running out of munnies (it's everybody else's fault and foremostly the Poles who took the low paid jobs)

I think the bigger issue is that many Scots on the lower rungs of the ladder don't even put up a fight as they can see that the handouts through the DSS are pretty decent and are enough for them to finance their alcohol binges. Poles can't be blamed for that.

Now, on topic. The paper needed to be far more thorough in its coverage and not lead people to false conclusions. Knowing many Scots as I do, they target their own a lot too due to football hooliganism and social unrest. I see the paper didn't mention anything about that or about general criminal issues whereby anyone nearby will do for attack.

Sorry but this is a lame excuse of Scottish antipolish sentiment. Poles in Scottland are targeted specifically because they are Poles.

There are those radical nutters that will be anti anything and such people attack Poles. Some attack them for being Poles, yes, but they are in the overwhelming minority. It's not a lame excuse at all, it's reality!
