A tongue-in-cheek, yet brutally honest and clearly truthful Saturday night thread. :)
Because I'm ill, and I'm bored (but obviously not the chairman of the bored like Iggy pop lol).

1. Our airport is bigger and better. More than twice the number of passengers, and 80% more aircraft movements. You may get a second airport for the chavvy airlines eventually, but we have Liverpool to look after those (and the direct flights to Poland, hehe). We can get a train home from ours (and soon a tram), whereas you have to catch a bus full of muggers and pickpockets :p

2. We've got Heaton Park, which isn't exactly an exciting name, but at least we don't name one of our most important parks after bathrooms :D

3. Our trams don't stink of beer at 7am like yours do.

4. Our buses aren't 100 years old.

5. I only have to work for 10 minutes to buy a large cappuccino, not two hours. And it's not made of Gold Blend either :p

6. You were voted the most boring European capital, whereas no-one in their right mind would call Manchester boring, even if they don't really like it.

7. We have world-famous football teams, even though everyone hates the Glasers.

8. Our IKEA has the best views in the UK, and better views than yours, of course :)

9. We don't spoil the city centre with concrete council estates (we've got Salford for that, anyway ;) )

10. Beetham Tower 2, Warsaw Trade Tower 0 (even after extra time).

11. Manchester's one of the most important music cities in the world, and this is undisputed. Whereas Warsaw is groundbreaking because... Hmm. Answers on a postage stamp - that will be enough space anyway :D

12. You haven't got The Home Of The Jumbo Cod. :D

14. We have Coronation Street and Shameless, whereas you've got M jak Miłość and Na Wspólnej - zzzzzz! No contest! :D

15. Amathyst and I live here, so it must rule :)

16. We may have loads of Poles too, but most of ours will go home - whereas most of yours will never leave! ;)

17. However, my favourite uncle lives in Warsaw, so it's not all bad.
And you've got Kryminalni (or did have, but they cancelled it, so scrub that one, haha) ;)

whereas no-one in their right mind would call Manchester boring

Yet, in your top ten, the best ten reasons you could think for Manchester being a great city

Our IKEA has the best views in the UK, and better views than yours, of course

Wow. Life there must be exciting, if one of the best things about the city is that its IKEA has good views. Do you have a WHSmith with very nice carpet as well?

Frankly at least 3 Polish cities knock Warsaw into a cocked hat.

(One of them may, or may not, be Gorzów WKLP :) )

Manchester - Kraków? Manchester - Poznań? Manchester - Wrocław? It wouldn't be a first-round knockout by any stretch...

Clearly the meaning of the phrase "tongue-in-cheek" is lost on you. :p

Kraków? Wrocław?

Nice places to visit, but I'd still rather live round here ;)

Manchester has nothing against Krakow. Though Warsaw is a really crap city, you would have to compare it to Bristol.

I really wonder how London and Manchester would look like after being bombed to the ground and after that being under communist occupation for over 60 years ;)

London and Manchester

Still a lot better than Warsaw, city planners have ruined that city for money.

What's the point of brand spanking new trains and buses that are always late. Our trains and buses turn up on time.

The women are about 347 times more attractive than Mancunian women with their spare tyre stomachs.

You can have fantastic meal in Warsaw without selling your shirt to pay the bill.

After a night on the town, Warszawians have a kebab and go home. Not turn the streets into fight club.

The real-IRA doesn't want to bomb us

You gave the world the Stone Roses, we gave the world Chopin.

Having a coffee doesn't mean Starbucks. Many, many unique coffee shops.

Looks wise, Krakowskie Przedmiescie knocks the spots off anything in Manchester

We're the heart of regional business and politics in the new EU 10. You're the heart of business and politics about as far as Salford.

Unlike Mancunians, people in Warsaw speak understandable English.

Personally, I find just about anyone under 30 in Poland, living in a major city, speaks very good English. Their language abilities certainly beat the UK, where the school system seems to have given up trying to teach a second language.

I think that is more down to the fact that English is the number one language in most aspects of life when its crosses borders. I personally love different languages, but im not the best student, but I find it important and rewarding to speak more than one. Also we dont really have a need to learn another language. Its not something you would find on a job application form.

You're right of course, but it's still disappointing. I think language is more than a tool to help find a better job or get a bag of apples at the market. It helps you understand another culture.

In case you hadn't noticed, this country also got bombed, and the lefties have done almost as much damage since ;)

More like Birmingham imo, both full of ugly concrete ;)

You've never been here, have you? There are so many hot women here, not all of them are fat either.

Women in Wroclaw are far better looking than in Warsaw, but still too thin for me, I'll stick to British women, thanks. I can handle a larger woman, you clearly can't :p

Droma:

And hundreds of other great bands and musicians, whereas you gave us what else exactly? Piotr Rubik? lol

We're not a capital city, whereas Warsaw is, yet we compare very well. The difference is, you'd be nothing without UK/EU funding!

lol, so naive!

You forgot about the hundreds of thousands of bilingual Polish racists we've got over here :)

It's understandable to most British people, unlike "aj vant cup af ti pliz" lol :D

I am sorry about your health. I hope you recuperate soon because you are visibly not yourself, as your illness badly influences your emotions.

People are patriots of their places. I would never move to any foreign city no matter how great it would be.

But, being from Krakow, I could live in Warsaw because it is a very fine city.

Of course it is still backward, just like all Poland. But wait another 20 years and Warsaw will surpass Manchester beyond comparison.

After all, it is a capital, while Manchester is only one of major British cities.

Manchester has a bigger gay quarter.

Manchester was one of only two cities in England (indeed, UK) which had a branch of the Guardian Angels patrolling it (those guys in red berets, like in NY... and it's true)

Manchester has a fantastic Chinese quarter with some of the best food imaginable.

Time will tell ;)

I wonder if your second Metro line will have been completed by then. The Chinese will probably have built a dozen entire systems by 2030 :D

True, but what a city/region!

If Warsaw was destroyed and Greater Manchester was moved to replace it, it would be a great improvement for Poland.

But if the same happened to Manchester and Warsaw was moved here, it would be a disaster. We've already got one "boring Birmingham", thanks! :D

Trevek:

Has the best Cantonese restaurant in the UK, apparently.

Which is a MUCH greater accolade than "best Chinese restaurant in Poland" :)

Best reason of all! :p

Well, the music scene in Manchester has produced sublime talents.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_bands_from_Manchester

The list from Warsaw can't even hope to come close to the quality that is on that list there. I can't even name any bands from Warsaw.

I've got music by at least 25 of those bands, and that's not even close to being a complete list (for me, or otherwise) :)

Funniest thing of all, Warsaw were from Manchester - and look what became of them ;)

Always late, Droma? How do you know that? Buses tend to be punctual in the UK

Yes but the baggage and vanity that come with them means that any self-respecting man will steer well clear. Mancunians tend to be realists and Warsaw folk wild romanticists that jump ship and then compliment their city from afar.

The Thai restaurant I went to in Warsaw was pretty expensive. I don't imagine Manchester to be that expensive.

Manchester is not Nottingham or Blackpool, Droma. Besides, there are plenty fights in Warsaw. You just don't seem them.

Different genres of music, the Roses and Chopin. Why even attempt to compare them?

But the coffee is much more fairly priced in Manchester.

That would make things even worse :D

Łódź is just the "Polish Manchester" because of the former textile industry, nothing else!

Comparing Warsaw to London is like comparing Toruń to Kraków - both nice in their own way, but that's it!
