In my day Piast beer was available but it sucked! Once, while drinking in a restaurant, I found ground glass in my beer! When I went to the manager to complain, he looked at me, non-plussed, and said "no i co"?. LOL

To balance my disdain of Polish beer ,Im not a huge fan of any beer but in Poland I soon learned to stick to the Vodka and now I gag at anything but Polish (or lithuaninan TBH) Vodka :)
and Mead, Polish Honey mead,seriously a drink of the Gods if they were into getting hammered and discovering an ability to literaly siit down in a campfire and only move when the third person screaming at you finally gets the message home......long,and blurred story lol

I humbly vote Czech Republic for the best beer in central Europe. Every time I have Polish beer, it's too carbonated/gassy- anyone know of any good and accessible brewers making something closer to ale?

Polish beer scene is developing. To be honest very slowly, but if you want some information about what is the best on Polish beer market you must check out our new site beerguide.pl.

I'm the initiator of Polish BeerGuide.pl, so I hope it won't be spam if I write some information about it. I invited the best Polish beer bloggers to write at BeerGuide.pl. The idea is to write about Polish beer for foreingers who don't speak Polish and are visiting Poland, and want some good, especially craft, Polish beer. Maybe it will be helpful also for Poles who live in UK and are visiting home. If you have any questions about Polish beer I'll be happy to answer.

BTW last weekend I was in Leeds in The Hop and North Bar - amazing places. About 20 taps each. Great stouts and IPAs.

Actually, there are about 100 kinds brewed in Poland.

It is quite impossible that all are too carbonated.

Polish people don't have proper taste regarding beer and some foods. Most of Czech, Slovak and German brands of beer are better than polish, but the same big producers are also killing that quality. Local brewerys are still producing better beer using domestic ingedients, but most of polish population don't buy it (because of price, or lack of taste).
My favourite beers:
1. Fosters - Australia
2. Singha - Thailand
3. Radeberger - East Germany
4. DAB - Dortmund, Germany
5. Gambrinus - Czech Rep.

Back in the days when I was teaching English I used to teach a group at the Perła brewery in Lublin and it was and still is amazing beer. http://www.perla.pl

Don't take it personally, but all beers, you've mentioned are light highly attenuated lagers. The world of beer is far more interesting than this style. Good examples of light lagers in Poland are Ciechan Wyborne and Lwówek Książęce. Quite well known is Żywe from Amber. For me, as a beer-geek, the most exciting are stouts, IPAs, witbier and bavarian wheat beer (Hefeweizen), and Polish breweries brew that beer. Of course, you don't find it in the shop at the corner, but if you know what find. The style of beer, which is very good represented in Poland is Baltic Porter - strong, dark beer, with very rich taste. To sip, not to guzzle. ;)

Cornelius Baltic Porter is the worst one. ;)
Quite good and well known is Żywiec Porter. I think it should be available in UK. I know that is widely exported, especiallly to USA. It's far more dry and more bitter than Cornelius Baltic Porter. At beerguide.pl is review of this beer.

Radeberger is pils not lager. What can I say - I don't like a taste of porter. Lwówek Książęce - I know this beer and I don't say it's bad. It is just not my favourite.

Most Polish beers have already been ranked by foreigners at ratebeer.com and beeradvocate.com. Nice site though
