Polish eligibility to claim benefits in the UK

Hi,

I live in London with my polish fiancee, since we met she has never worked or even looked for work though she did go to the effort of getting a national insurance number when she moved here at the beginning of march 2009. This has been extremely hard as London is very expensive, I earn good money but sadly to support 2 has been a major strain on my finances and our relationship.

She ended our relationship last week, so I have had to leave and spend a week away while I work out what to do, I cant afford to rent 2 flats at the same time and support us both again and as there is no hope of her ever wanting me I just cant take looking after her any more not to mention I have been used enough as it is, I really do sound like a whining ***ch, apologies for that I will now get to my point.

She has no one in the UK, no friends as she never leaves the house, no one to turn to for help at all, in my experience during a couple of weeks between contracts this year I discovered I could not get any benefits due to her being my fiancee and she was not eligible for benefit? it was all very confusing and again a massive drain on me financially.

So now she is a single Polish woman living in London (living in the UK since march 2009) with no job, my question is, is she eligible to claim anything at all? I was hoping jsa and housing, I need to know this as I intend to remove myself from our lease next week and also disable her access to my bank accounts, I have no choice I just wanted the info so I could post it to her or something.

Could she get deported?

god what a mess.


PS. Please no derogatory comments on my ex partner or racism re:polish claiming benefits, I happen to love this woman and my experience of the Polish and Poland has only been a pleasure (apart from this relationship)

Since she ended the relationship, you should not feel bad about cutting her off. If you know her family, I'd call their parents and let them know she will be homeless soon.

Possibly none NI based contributary JSA, but if she has never worked and has no intention of working, I doubt they'll give her that as she'll have to prove she has been looking for work and by the sounds of it she has no intention of doing so - as for housing benefits possibly, but again she'd have to make the effort to to the town hall and get the forms, why doesnt the lazy biatch get a job like the rest of us?

She won't get a thing because she hasn't worked legally for 12 months. It'll either be work or the streets for her - or she can go home.

I am a freelance consultant, I work all the time and these months flew past, I am very much in love with her but I am aware how stupid this is, was hoping she would return to being the woman I met that made me ask her to marry me.

I have researched these sites, having worked for the government before I know that the systems in place are a complete mess and also those in charge of implementing them are often the least skilled people in the UK workforce and mostly unskilled agency workers themselves so I wanted to hear from people that may have had similar experience.

Aha! this is indeed the reason behind why I could not claim during a short dry patch of work earlier this year, I was hoping that with us no longer being together she would become eligible as yes, her options are the streets or to go home.

You're much kinder than I am, it would be an old oyster card with enough on to get to the bus station and bus ticket back to Poland!

She will not get JSA as she needs to be actively looking for employment and furnish evidence of that. She is a coaster, one of the escaper brigade. Leave her to her own devices and cut your losses.

Isn't the deposit on the Oyster card worth 3 pounds? I'd be inclined to simply pay for the bus fare and no more ;)

(mind you, the bus is probably more expensive than the plane....)

she may have more money than you, when you was at work maybe she was prostituting herself, 3 clients a day earning £60, its alot!

I am indeed British, my dealings with the job centre were confusing beyond beleif.

No offence, but you only have her word for that, any women who has had independent means all their adult life isnt going to be comfortable relying on someone for every penny they spend, in fact moving to another country you'd have thought she'd be desparate to have her own money coming in if thats what she was always used to.

I do see a fair bit of using, yes.

Many need prompting, that's true.

She is more than likely planning a way to get money to send back to Poland and get set up there. In my experience, when Poles travel, they always compare where they go to Poland and are critical of their chosen holiday destination. It's not about absorbing and sampling a new culture, it's about seeing it as a yardstick and to somehow see that Poland is so much better in all areas. I actually told sb to rap up as his comparisons were wearing thin.

Always set out with the thought in mind that she is using you and go from there.

Send her to a polish church, where she can get a support of the Poles-she might be able to find sth from there, and to my knowledge these benefits are really pennies..what was she doing in Poland?She might be able to find a job of a teaching assistant-she might say she has experience of working in PL in a primary school. It is not a lot, but still able to give her bread.
Unfortunately, Ldn is a very expensive place and there are not that many opportunities. In fact, she might be better off back in PL.
Im Polish myself, having lived in Ldn before.
Why did she break up, if I may ask? Were you of enough help to her?

I think she actually might be able for benefits, maybe housing support, employment search benefits, scholarship to gain qualifications...but she needs a lot of ecouragement, love, and a guidance...DOes she speak English at all? She may also need a career advisor? Have u thought of that? To all English: Pl is much better country to live, but that poor girl might not have realised that before moving there and mind that she moved there for the guy.
