Its become such a problem, that the Latvian government and Latvian women refuge agencies have had to pressurise both the Irish and british governments, respectively, to stamp down on such activity.

It is very, very widespread. Mostly involving Pak/Nig/Bang/Indian males and accession states females. Using Latvia(from a documentary I watched on TV3) as an example, what basically happens is some working class wee girl is promised a better life in London/Manchester/Dublin/Cork wherever. Shes unemployed in Riga so jumps at the chance. Before she leaves shes told her future employer is having some visa difficulties and that if she marries him, she will be paid five large, an even better position in his company and he will be very grateful. She agrees.
Then she arrives into UK/Ireland. Her passport is confiscated, treated like shiiiit, shacked up in her future "employers" gaff until the wedding day. If they do their homework and play it cool, they get away it. If they remain "married", after three years, he receives permanent residence under EU legislation. She gets the wad of moolah. If shes lucky.
If they are clowns, like from the story above, they get locked up.
But you have to be very, very foolish not to get away with it.

Due to the influx of Irish into Australia circa 2009-2010(20,000) I predict we shall see a rather upturn in the number of Australian-Irish "marriages" over the foreseeable future.
I know of an obese Irish dude from the bog(who is definitely in the closet) who married an absolutely beautiful American girl, so he could get the F1(I think its called?) to remain in the US. He was on a years J1(?) visa. Got away, no bother. He will eventually get citizenship, if they keep their nose clean and he, keeps her sweet. Girl is so sweet she done it as a favour. He treats her like crap.
