Can you imagine Brits demanding this kind of crap in Spain or any other Country we work in? Nope...It just wouldnt even enter in to our heads...Maybe its our "get on with it" attitude that differs!

Was it imperative that you were in the workplace? Would the company have lost a lot of cash if they allowed you compassionate leave?

Here you are entitled to 3-5 paid days leave if an immediate relative passes away. I thought Canada would be similar or better.

that was horrible but I am over it now. We all have stories of good employers and bad ones. This particular one was a law breaker on many levels. Small companies get away with many things even in Canada;)

Well, I was not offered that, even if it was statutory. I was too shocked to demand it considering the state I was in at that time.

It is in most work places. Regardless, I quit after 3 months and went back to uni full time, got myself a degree and plus, so good things come out of the bad ones in the end:). I don't think I would do it of my boss was a good one.
Going back on topic, we don't really know what happened and I would like to find out. Those stories usually have 2 versions.

A good employer will always get paid back dividends if he/she treats their empoloyees well. Short term pain, for long term gain.

Back to the OP. I would wait a week or so before I decided on any industrial action. Factory workers are very exposable. Wait until you cool down a bit before you do anything rash.

going back on topic: I think that there is much more to the story ( we actually don't know the story) and the latter incident is probably just a result of the previous conflict between those workers and the employer.

A British cream cake company has been accused of a race-hate crime after it refused to halt its production line to mark the death of Poland’s president.

Management at Laurens Patisserie, which supplies eclairs for Tesco and Sainsbury’s, was forced to back down after Polish workers at the plant, who make up 70 per cent of the 1,600-strong workforce, tried to stage an impromptu shutdown.
