Europe, many Poles are still choosing to come here simply because they like the way we live. Have they not heard that Ireland is in a state of collapse? asks KATHY SHERIDAN

THE NUMBER of foreign nationals registering to work in Ireland fell by half last year. Hardly startling news, given the international coverage of our economic collapse. But what is startling, you might think, is that anyone would want to come here at all. Poland’s ambassador to Ireland, Tadeusz Szumowski, believes the figures reflect a growing realisation that Ireland is “no longer the land of milk and honey”.

Nonetheless, nearly 14,000 of his fellow citizens still made the move here. Did they miss the news? That’s entirely possible, says Mariusz, a Polish resident living in Co Kildare:

“The Romanians who arrived most recently are where the Polish people were six years ago,” says Mariusz. They have no bargaining power and are undercutting other migrant workers, he alleges, accepting rates well below the minimum wage, in a classic race to the bottom. “I have no problem with them, I really don’t. That’s how we were just a few years ago. But if they arrive right now, what are they going to do? Poland is Manhattan for Romanians. What do you think Ireland is to them ?”

“If we had the same situation with migrants in Poland as you have had in Ireland, it would be Armageddon,” says Tomasz Bastkowski, principal of the Polish Saturday School in Dublin.

A majority of Polish expatriates intend to stay abroad next year despite the threat of job losses amid global financial turmoil and nearly 40 percent do not want to return, according to a poll released on Friday.

"Just 22 percent of Polish migrants intend to move back to Poland" in 2008 or 2009, said the survey published by money.pl, a major Polish-language financial portal.

The poll comes amid a slew of media reports, notably in Britain, which have claimed that Poles are planning to head home in droves.

The study was entitled "Toppling the Myth: There Will Be No Massive Return of Emigrants".

It's not as easy to move as you think. When you get a taste of sth better, you don't move away from it so easily. Drinking Tyskie in Poland and drinking it in Ireland, what's the difference? ;) ;)

I don't really see the Irish as an enemy at all, WB. I am 25% Irish after all. If you can say why they are the enemy then I'll be happy but too many folk label others as the enemy without knowing why. For example, Catholics killed Proddies and vice-versa but did they know why? I doubt it!

Read it again - it says "22 percent of Polish migrants intend to move back to Poland in 2008 or 2009". Did you notice that "intend to" bit? It's not statistics - it's just prediction.

It might as well be for 2010 or 2012 :-)

I told you before - the guy is a typical attention seeker (and that's only one
of his many mental disorders) and he's getting a lot of undeserved attention
on this forum.

Oh, well - maybe he was banned from politics.ie again and has to spout his
bullcr*ap somewhere?

Anyway - he's posting good news! Poles are still milking Ireland and there's
absolutely feckall that retards like Harvey can do about it :-)

"Intend to" means that it's only a prediction (an old prediction for the years 2008, 2009)

In 2010 they should post predictions for 2010-12 or something.

Just over 20,000 eastern euopeans left the Irish state in 2009. How many were Poles, I do not know. The figure is not available. Over 14,000 Poles arrived. Yep, they are all leaving.

They are also joining the RUC in large numbers. Big, big, big mistake.

I find it hard to believe. Any Pole who is stupid enough to join the RUC deserves
all that he will eventually get.

Yes, the money hungry Poles are now joining the RUC in large numbers. All the "Catholic solidarity" bs they spouted was just that, bs. Now they are happy to take the queens shilling and oppress the very people who welcomed them into this nation. Theres a word for that.

Big, big, big mistake.

Now - that's bad (providing it's true).
As I said - any arsehole who joined the RUC deserves what is coming to him.

However, I hope that is as accurate as most of the information you post, RN.

The RUC need to fill quotas. Irish Catholics are scared sh*tless to join the forces after the recent attack on RUC Catholic officers. The Catholic quotas have to be met, which community do you think the Crown will target for recruitment?

Almost 1,000 Polish people applied to join the Police Service of Northern Ireland in its latest recruitment drive.

The police have confirmed that 968 of a total of more than 7,700 applications last November were from Poles - more than 12%.

Well, the Brits are the national broadcaster for part of this green and lovely land. As much as I hate to admit it, it is a hard fact. Hardly surprising that BBC report on NI then, is it?

Indeed it is not and revenue from the Ireland obvioulsy doenst go a miss either. Just would have thought that an established EU country would have their own official news channel.

Setanta, that's a global enterprise. Good to see that Ireland has been usurped ;) ;) ;) Bought and sold! Right up to speed now.
