This seems strange to me. I wonder if it's true, or if there's more to the story Teenager 'refused service at Polish shop in East Yorkshire for being English' Police and council officers are investigating allegations that a teenage student was told to leave a Polish supermarket because they have a policy not to serve English people. from The Daily Telegraph

The Telegraph's usually considered respectable and in any case is just reporting a situation that they picked up from the local media. So whether or not the girl's story is true, there seems to be some sort of complaint against the shopkeeper.

In my experience the Polish shops springing up around the UK are happy to serve anybody - I've had no problem with them. There's one in my town with bilingual signs saying 'Polish shop with an English flavour'!!

I wouldn't say he is a racist and I doubt he is a BNP supporter. The BNP probably wouldn't let him in due to his skin colour. He would be one of the first people the BNP would want kicked out of the country if they ever got any kind of power.

Mr Kumarasiri is just trying to make the point that there are too many people in the UK that don't speak enough English to even buy a stamp. He made the effort to learn the language when he came to live here. He just thinks everyone else should too.

Did you read what he said ?

He had said: "I am part of a service but how can I serve them if I don't understand what they are asking for?

"When I came to England I obeyed the British way of life, I got into the British way of life.

"That is what I ask everyone else to do - respect the country where you are working and living."

Banning people from his Post Office may seem a little severe, but I agree with his motives for doing so.

As usual though, people just want to jump on him and call him names.

The shopkeeper has probably had trouble with schoolies shoplifting.

Mind you, she says she stopped to 'buy a drink'... what kind?

Of course, I've never been patronised or belittled in Poland for not being able to order something word perfectly in Polish. Even the bus driver who couldn't understand two words beginning with a 'b' and an 'n' (bilit normalni, bilet normalny, bylyt normalni... not sure how many other two words one might possibly use on a bus) suddenly understood after 3 minutes of obviously sincere incomprehension) when I shouted "Jestem głpui cudzoziemiec i nie mowię po Polsku!" "Ah! Bilet Normalny!"

Sorry, I was being ironic. There's a warehouse clothes shop I refuse to shop in because of the snotty cow who works the till.

Actually the tax office ladies love my helpless look and do things for me.

I can't believe it's true. This must have been made up by BNP. I know how it is to have a shop. You will sell to anyone just to get a profit. Especially in the small food shop where profit margin is small you value any customer who comes. Unless of course you think he or she may steal something. Then the story is different and that might be the case here. Maciej

A couple years ago in Philadelphia a sandwich takeout shopkeeper posted a sign that read “This is America, please speak English when ordering” as a protest of all the Mexicans that come here and expect everyone to accommodate their lazy lack of effort to learn our native language. He didn’t deny anyone service but the PCers went ballistic anyway. The City Council threatened to bring against him some trumped-up charges about ethnic intimidation or some such.
The guy and his shop and sign became a rallying cry for similar minded folks and he ended up winning the stare-down against the power-abusing PCers. He reasoned that he himself was the son of immigrants who elected to learn English upon arriving on our shores. Tough to argue against that.
Now everyone who comes and orders a sandwich gets a free bumper sticker with the slogan “This is America, speak English” on it. They are quite popular, much to the chagrin of the PCers. I’ve got one on my car.

Moral of the story: Decent people are sick and tired of having all this PC BS forced on them and being expected to bend over backward and accommodate lazy foreigners who come here and disrespect our culture. It is a simple choice between accommodation and assimilation. And those who elect to go to another land should be the ones to alter their ways and assimilate. And attempting to speak the native language is the most basic way of assimilating.

i was lost i n the polish area of hull, i walked into a shop to ask about bus times, and i was ordered out of the shop! i was extremely shocked, i explained i was from australia and needed directions, his attitude changed immediately, and gave me all the help i needed. i believe this story 100%, its happened to me! jon, australia

Says it all really, why do we put up with anti British racism?

We don't know the full story, especially about how the teenager was behaving or whether it was her first visit to the shop. Also Polish shopkeepers are not generally known for turning away business. The owner would have been prosecuted by now if it was actually provable racism.

Something doesn't quite ring true.

The Daily Telegraph is indeed respectable. I'm surprised. If true, this is a path that others had better not go down. It just isn't right.
