I understand some of HM subjects prefer to be called English, Welsh, Scottish or N. Irish (Ulstermen?) rather than Britons. How do you feel about it and why? If you ran into a compatriot in Milan or Bangladesh would you be more likely to say: 'We're also from Britain!'?

They all live on an island, they're all black and addicted to tea, to me they're all jewish liberal n*ggers (with the possible exception of Shelley who's a scary person).

I'd say 'I'm Scottish' first and foremost :) Scotland is a separate country and there is a border which proves that ;) England has produced some of the best musicians ever but they are English, not Scottish. I do follow the British at the Olympics but, otherwise, I'm Scottish.

Sok, I think I had one cup of tea in 23 years in Scotland. I didn't really start drinking tea til I went to Japan :)

Thats because you're in denial of being a Brit, only deep denial can stop a Brit from enjoying his tea.

You live on a foggy muddy island, you speak english, you're a BRIT! There's variations to brits, there's scottish brits, irish brits, wannabe brits.

Offensive language removed.

Because Im English, any man and his dog can obtain a British passport and call themsevles British..they can not however call themsevles English.

If they were my compatriots, Id probably say what city I was from as its pretty obvious which country Im from.

Polonius3:
N. Irish (Ulstermen?)

They're Northern Irish as far as I am concerned, others and a lot of them included call themselves British.

Ulster is a place..just like Belfast..Not a country.

Scots hate the English and prefer to be called Scots, never met a Scot her referred to himself / herself as British

Welsh are proud of being Welsh and prefer to be called Welsh and Ive never heard a Welsh person call themselves British either.

Cornish people also prefer to be called Cornish rather than British.

English people generally prefer to be referred to as English, even though we dont get the choice to put this on official forms..the option is British white..Most scrub this out and write English there though :D

Well the occupied six counties of the north of Ireland are not British and we have a sea to prove it but the people who think otherwise are brits.

I say I'm English. Some people refer to me as English and some call me British. Doesn't bother me in the slightest what they call me.

Is this a non topic or what?

AdamKadmon:

What do you think about deliberations on the subject

What relevance is this to Scotland ? This Yale lecturer has read approved Brit histories and is totally ignorant of the processes that were going on in Scotland.

AdamKadmon:
From where would the revolutionary ranks have come?

What does Colley say about the Scottish insurrection of 1820 ?
AdamKadmon:
The biggest riots in the eighteenth century were the Gordon riots,

These did not happen in Scotland.
The biggest riots were against the Act of Union in 1707.
Not forgetting the Jacobite rebellions.

AdamKadmon:
miserable council houses with these big pictures of Margaret Thatcher or the royal family

PMSL.

AdamKadmon:
They see themselves as British

I'm from a mixed race family (Scottish and English). Born and brought up in England but followed various Scottish customs in the family. Brother was born in Scotland.

I have no problem being called a Brit... Probably best description of me. It also saves arguments with Scottish nationalists who object to me referring to myself as Scottish.

You are partly right, with the influx of our colonial cousins they had to find a way to ensure we all "bonded" and lumping us all in one was wonderful way of doing it..please feel free to look it up.

Yeah and if we all sang Kumbayah it would be perfect :)

Ah well, the future will be that we all will be called Europeans anyway and like the US, it'll be sth like "I'm European from the Netherlands" or any other country of course.

N. Irish (Ulstermen?)

At this moment in history, 'Ulster' is made up of 9 counties, 6 in Britain and 3 in the Republic of Ireland.
So it would be inaccurate to call people of Ulster British.

You mean, like Polish hard-core nationalists think Kashubians are (if of the Tusk variety) are not real Polish?
By the way my wife is a true Góralka, and she thinks of herself first of all of being a Góralka and then Polish.

and Donegal is the very north so Northern Ireland is inaccurate as well.

Sorry, they're not in Britain, they're in UK. I often found it amusing when 'Ulstermen' referred to me as a 'Brit'.

I always liked the term "6 counties".

When I was at Queen's Belfast, one of the (Irish) lecturers told us a story of when he went to the doctor's. The doc asked if he drank. He replied, "This is Ireland, you have to drink!" The doc replied, "This is Ulster, and you don't!"

I once had a protestant Ulsterman ask me what most Brits thought of his kind as. I commented most Brits would probably think of him as 'Irish' (not necessarily knowing the difference). He nodded woefully, "Aye, I was afraid ye'd say that!"
