What emphasis to employers here lay on Continuous Professional Development (CPD)? It seems to me that all too many move outwith their chosen field and the necessary investment and incentives aren't in place to encourage them to stay put. What is told to university graduates here upon graduating? I had a careers service at both unis to help me out.

I'm always suspicious of documentaries that show only immigrants that cant speak English. It help re-inforce the us versus them mentality. From unskilled workers to middle-class politicions and they still could'nt find fluent speakers.

how many language do u speak fluently?
Me for instance, Im able to write comments in English and they are quite (I hope) intelligible. But if you come across me on the street I couldnt tell u fluently how to get to the nearest bus stop. Its really not easy to learn to speak other language especially if you dont use that language on your daily basis.

two things:

in Poland, if you speak English fluently, you're most likely educated and can get a better job than picking veggies on a farm.

secondly, how many people in the polish government speak fluent english?

My point is that there are sh1t loads of Polish people who speak perfect english.. They could have sought out some for them for the sake of the documentary, especially when they went to POland. People who work on buildings and farms may have very poor english and that was shown in the documentary but Polish and Czechs etc who work in retail ,hotels pubs and so on are fluent enough after about a year or so..

let's not get carried away here. "sh1t loads" speaking "perfect english"? if you were talking about Holland, Denmark....maybe. But Poland, no. I have seen thousands of English students in Poland, and the only "perfect" speakers I've met are the teachers, and even then, some teachers aren't "perfect" speakers and often times do not venture beyond a C1 classroom.

I get what people are saying,Western european are decades a head in relation to the english language. However there has been a significant jump in Polish people speaking english.Once they get over their shyness, they are a lot better that than one would initially assume.

I knew maybe 40 or so polish people in my small town here and about 20% spoke perfect english(not teachers) after 2 years almost everyone of them spoke excelent english. At least good enough to appear on a documentary about their people and explain their situation intellectually.
Also that guy on the documentary who had his birthday,he looks at least 55.

In my high school there was something like 10 on 32 pupils who spoke quite exellent english. But it was an expetion. On average there is hard to find any ppl who can make a fluent sentence with correct lexics.

No your wrong, its a simple case of $$$ which provides a bigger incentive to poles as the reward is bigger.

No its not, its "cheap labour" flouncing under the guise of "competitiveness"

And don't forget their favourite word "multiculturalism".

But the Peterborough county is getting richer

Thats due the rail and road links to london.

Those stuck to their trades and unwilling to take any other job?

I would love to do a different job, i know many people that would like to do the same but to do so would mean that we would have to start off at the bottom and when you have a mortgage and a family then that is not an option unless your either stupid or desperate.
enkidu:
There was a guy on this forum, who claim that he owns a company. He said that he don't employ any non-british people and avoid to do any business with non-British companies.
My deepest respect to this one.

He shall have got a huge promotion on the media, get some medal, OBE or at least a handshake from the Queen! Because he is the one who actually doing something.

So hes putting more brits on the dole and he should be awarded a medal? honestly you should listen to yourself.
enkidu:
And then we will see. We Poles are quite accustomed to the urban warfare.

How funny, an slightly armed rabble of poles vs an army that has fought for the last 50 years in an urban environment i.e N.ireland. Tell me when you plan to start the revolution and i will get the pop corn out and watch live leak.
enkidu:
And the Poles are getting these jobs. In British factories, on British farms - British employer are prefering Poles over Brits! Why do you think they are doing this?

I think it would be better to ask you why you think this is happening, what makes me laugh about people like yourself is that you are incredibly naive as all the understanding of the situation is based on your 2-3 years of experience in a foreign country.
Companies prefer polish workers for the same reason they preferred portuguese workers before them, they are easy to exploit, they work for less, many don't have inconvenient families and these are just a few of the reasons why.
The reality is if polish workers were such miracle workers as you are suggesting then what the f**k happened to poland.

Merged thread:
Why do the majority of English people think that the Polish people "take" their jobs?

I always found this comment really offensive. Even my english best friend can be really mean and Polish people and say things like this. I was watching a programme on Youtube called "The poles are coming" about Polish people immigrating to England. I found it really interesting as there is a part in the programme where the presenter is talking to some English teenagers/yound adults who say they are desperate to get a job but cant because the polish have taken them. When actually, when the presenter offers them a job that is paid 7 pounds an hour working in a field picking vegetables, the english men just laugh and say are you having a laugh. Why do they think that the Poles have taken their jobs? When ACTUALLY, in this case, the Poles are doing the jobs that the English, (in my opinon) are too lazy to do. I also think that the Polish are much more hardworking than the English in general and i find it very ignorant of some English people saying these things. Does anyone else agree or have any other experiences of English people saying this to them?

Heres the video if anyone wanted to watch it for themselves. Watch it from the begining up to about 1.45 for the comment on the jobs.

zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzhere we go again, well done, moan whinge bleat and ********* complain about some english people who do the same. Its tired, old and, well, frankly pointless.
heres a quick rundown. Poles came here in huge numbers, the wages people payed were halved because the Poles were prepared to live in shared accomodation or,in the case of those agriculture type jobs,in sheds and caravans. Why then when a working man used to be able to support his family then all of a sudden he finds himself replaced by a newcomer or on half his old wages shouldnt some english people complain that jobs are hard to find?
Basically, get over yourself, you are here,I presume you are in work,WTF do you care what someone who has roots here who maybe isnt in work or is and is complaining still about low wages thinks about you,you obviously didnt have locals feelings high on your priorities when you moved here, why change your veiws or start to understand/empathise now?
