The UK of course chose that great British creature...the Lion...errr hang on , we don,t have any lions in the UK...and never have had...whats that all about?

the uk did not chose the lion, england did.

on the royal coat of arms, there are 2 animals represented symbolising, i think, the union of the crowns, the lion for england and the unicorn for scotland, so at least the english chose a creature that does exist..................still

er,no,Richard I chose the 3 lions as Englands symbol, probably adapted from his father,Henri II 's single lion.
and, erm,Scotlands is the Lion rammpant ....

I am still puzzled why we in the UK have a lion as a national symbol...

We could have had an Eagle , like Poland , Germany , and the USA

At least they have eagles... (OK, after Czernobyl, I imagine Russia also has 2 headed ones), but there aren't too many lions prowling around the British Isles.

What symbol would you have preferred?

Why would we have had an eagle?

The British Bull Dog is also a UK symbol.

What kind of wildlife did GB have in the old days? Squirrels, pretty much like today probably. Well maybe some skinny wolves running around.. a codfish? Yeah, the ugly Bulldog was made by old limey so be it. Lol.

Jk.. Bulldogs are the coolest. Too bad they cost a mint to buy one or I would keep one in my apartment.

UK has the Robin. But i'm sure that the national bird was the Wren.

Anyway, myth has it that the Robin was a Wren. Also, both birds are sacred and woe betide anyone who harms them.

Yeah...a British bulldog would have been a better national symbol...slightly more British than an African lion anyways...

Funny, there's a tradition of hunting the wren on boxing day. there's a song, the cutty wren, about hunting it and cutting it up.

Didn't he do that in palestine, or somewhere. We had worms, like The Lambton Worm in Durham.

I always wondered why we in England called our country Great britain...?

It's to distinguish it from 'Lesser Britain' or in other words, Brittany.

That's how it came about in the first place!

Grendel

Grendel's mother... and she looked like Angelina Jolie http://mygloss.com/geek/files/2010/08/GrendelsMother4in.jpeg (I wouldn't mind having that on a shield... or a breast plate)

correct, officially it's the standard for the monarch who rules over Scotland, it used to be forbidden for anyone else to fly the lion rampant but the law was changed to allow us mortals to show it as a symbol of our allegiance to the monarch, which we regularly do at Hampden ;-)
