GM wants 4 billion by the end of the month or they will fold
something like 33,000 people are going to loose thier jobs?

I wonder if I`ll still be able to get parts for my car , if need be?

Too cold to drive my motorcycle that for sure.

The ecomony is so screwed up, I wonder what will happen when Obama starts raising everybodys taxes, not a good time for this!

should've gotten a Honda instead ;)

on a more serious note, even if they do fold, i doubt that you will have trouble finding spare parts for you car if needed. i wouldn't worry about that. and i really don't think that GM will just close down. even though i do consider American automotive industry to be a complete crap, it is after all an iconic industry for America and it needs to stay afloat.

I think they will be bailed out, if they can present a good plan to Congress tommorrow.
Ford autos have become complete junk, I wouldnt buy one, thats for sure.

I have a 1998 Chevy Pickup with almost 300,000 miles on it, I suppose that I got lucky with that one?

Its cost something like $75.00 an hour per person on the payroll
the Japanese companies pay around $40.00

maybe these people should take a pay cut untill they can deliever a decent product.

Ask yourself this, can you afford to take home half of what you earn? China is hardly a country to compare with when you consider that 60% of the population live under the poverty line, are you suggesting that Americans live in poverty?

China also has very little in the way of human rights, therefore it's easy to exploit the workforce, and this is not something we want to re-introduce into the West.

Bailout is stupid. If they bail out any company it will be the same old company. If they do not bail out it will mean they will fall....reorganizes and be better.

Bailout means reinforce the status quo. Give the people who 'have' - more and the people who 'have not' - no opportunity to buy assets at fire sale prices.

Its better than being unemployed, these workers get 90% of their pay even when theyre laid off for months at a time, ceo`s rake in millions a year.
The autos are over priced nobody wants to buy them anymore.
They dont deserve to be bailed out.

$75.00 an hour, that is ridiculous. No bail out. Let them go under. They are worried about 3,000,000.00 people out of work.. What about the 250,000,000,00 other AMERICANS. DONT WE COUNT?.. They brought this upon themselves.. GREED!

It's rumored Ford won't even need a bailout. I've owned lot's of Fords, very few problems.

GM can go dinosaur for all I care.. The UAW can head to China and assemble lead filled toys. At least they're familiar with recalls.

I would suspect you've never worked in a factory let alone on an auto assembly line. The workers are not lazy and work hard.

The agreement to pay laid off workers was freely agreed to the big three management years ago when the big three were "Kings of the hill."

At this stage the UAW will have agree to termination of the job pay for laid off workers, wage cuts and other considerations or the big three will go into bankruptcy. Bankruptcy will cancel all labor agreements, contracts, etc. Will be somewhat like the airlines, TWA, for example. I doubt the union will want that.

And that was absolutely ridiculous.
There was an estimate given that it cost 20,000.00 to fire up the company jet, when they could have booked coach tickets for 800.00. The problem with Corporate America boils down to one word: greed.

Some UAW workers came to Chicago and worked with us at McCormick PL
when we were setting up the Auto show, most of them just stood around all day.

I don't like the whole bail out situation. It's just rewarding the very bad management. Anybody would love to mess up and then get this "bail out". They call it a bridge loan, which will be repaid, but who can guarantee that the 'bridge' will be paid? I think they should stop the extravagant pays, go humble for a while, keep on working and doing a good job at it. We don't really need the market flooded with Japanese cars. I'm sure GM, Ford and other CAN do a good job. $45/hr is enough for now. The country does good, we all do good. In the mean time, as long as you make enough for your fairly comfortable living, take it. Nobody NEEDS a corporate jet, just fly on business in a darn commercial plane just like everybody also. Wal-Mart execs can do it - so can Ford's and GM's.

interesting.. so, no bail out say you.. now, since the big 3 employ more americans then any other companies out there and you just shut their doors, what are you going to do with the 1/4 million of all of a sudden unemployed? and since cars are made of parts, you can easily 4x that number due to collateral shop closings. now what?

They literally have sections where they can go and the supervisor can't follow them. They go in there and smoke dope and get drunk. I've known UAW people who've actually admitted it and thought it was funny! Homer Simpson is based on these people and he's not an exaggeration. SOBs - the hell with them. American engineering isn't that far off Japan and Germany really, it's a matter of caring is all.

Hyundai plant in Alabama pays $28 bucks an hour, churns out cars with no defects, workers are relatively happy. Why wouldn't they be, making $57,000 a year?

There is not a significant difference between US cars and those of foreign manufacturers. I have owned Ford, Oldsmobile, Buick, Renault, MG, VW and Nissan, and with the exception of the Renault (first class junker) and the MG (very, very tempermental, but lots of fun), I have had good luck with them all.

In the past, I got rid of cars around 75,000 miles (120,700 km), but now wait until they have 150,000 miles (241,000 km). All cars today are significantly better then they were 30 years ago which is why I drive them twice as long as I did before.

Plain and simple, the US big three's problem are those of management.

plk123:

lol.. you're on a roll man.. sure..

You may laugh, PLK123, but management signed those contracts.

The big three management were responsible for the Japanese to have the small truck market to themselves for 10 years and more before they introduced their own small trucks to the US market.

When I had small kids and wanted to get a full-sized US made station wagon with a wiper on the back window, it wasn't available as an option. You could get it on the small sized station sized wagons US manufacturers were making to compete with the Japanese cars. (Stupid management decision.)

It takes guts to be a good successful manager. You have to be willing to fight the market, the workers, the competition to make your company a winner. But most of all, it takes good decisions which has been lacking in the past.

Well spoken. The more that the UAW gets the more they want.
The outrages wages that they demand, is passed down to the American consumer.. I for one will never buy an American made car again.
How much money did the UAW donate to the Presidential election? They are all crooks.

i sure didn't say that they did not but i surely wouldn't say it was all free will either. that is not how the unions work.

i disagree with you on the quality comparison.. i have driven many fords, a chevy a couple of nissans, toyotas, hondas and a benz. all the cars made over seas were hands down better in quality compared to anything coming out of detroit. even the nissan that i had that was made in japan was way better then the same model made here stateside. all the foreign cars were also way more reliable and easier to work on when they did need some help. that's all in my experience, no bs. that's why i think, the big 3 even if they survive will have issues for as long as they put out crap.

however, i do agree with you on the bad managment in motor city but even when directives were coming out of Stuttgart or Berlin, chrysler was still making junk.

I hope they won't get it! It's propaganda with the big 3! If they go bust then there will be no union and people will not make $100K just to screw a screw in a wheel. Then the company would have to rehire those workers and pay them $30K to $50K and problem is solved. A lot of money will be saved in the future by letting them fall!

My husband makes $41,000 after taxes,, He my daughter and I live very well on his income. We live a conservative life but
we live well. We bought a used car with 10,000 miles, for one third than what it would cost new. It serves us well. We prefer to eat at home. That saves money.. We still manage to put some money away.
If people would live within their means, then we would never have our present financial problems

You sir are wrong.. it has everything to do with the financial crisis. If people would have practised common sense, they would never had purchased large homes that they could not afford. Had they lived above their means and defaulted on their loans. The banks too were at fault. They gave out loans to people with no down payment and no sufficient funds to pay.

these lowlifes stripped the home of evrything before leaving, leaving property that was no able for the banks to regroup their losses.. The=321ore the financial meltdown

An unpopular view but probably the most pragmatic. It's good to suffer that way you're made cognizant of what you've lost, or in the process of losing. Being hungry awhile steels the resolve.. The next couple of years are necessary.

I like those cars too and if the UAW is made toothless you might just get them back.

Seems to work for the Asians, but they do it on a longer span. The renewed part isn't guaranteed but I think there's a healthy dose of fear going about here right now. When the upper middle class is scared everyone kind of gets in gear,.. Lawyers, Engineers , that kind of thing.

FDR said the business class is a "Stupid Class" and of course he was right. They're never satiated. They'll cut their own throat but at least they have sense to yell for someone to take away the knife.

It's kind of funny if you think about it.

It's a mentality thing, so many believe that they are screwed from the outset and are thus defeatist. Yes, it's hard to reinvigorate the economy when everything points against it, but certain measures can be taken to alleviate the drought and instill confidence.

Yes, you have to reinvorgorate the imagination first, then the bucks follow, then the conspicuous consumption continues, this begets more wealth. Spending for the sake of it is not so bad but you have to weather the storm, and a very nasty one is brewing. You ever want to read a good book read Studs Terkel "Hard Times" about the Depression. Chicago guy. Probably Top 10 book for me. You'd be surprised how many funny, good things came from it. It was more blessing than curse in hindsight. People were kinder to each other in the 30's. Not this dog eat dog stuff of the 90's.

Yeah, the lingering thought of ulterior motives crept to the fore all too often. What does this G want? should have been the foremost consideration. Times change and 1930's approaches appear dated but we can still learn a few tricks from the founding fathers and innovators of yesteryear.

It would seem to be the case, but there's a kid in California who has developed the Aptera which gets pretty good gas mileage. Google it. As a lot of us (most of us) never expected the hegemony so the imminent loss of it won't be that bad. If worse comes to worse we grow our own food and make our own whiskey. Many a dutiful lad resides Tennessee and Kentucky.

With the sincerest respect, only the British truly miss their superpower role, maybe the Russian. I don't think we're as drunk with it as you perceive.
