The Pulaski Scholarship Committee of Northeastern Pa. held its second annual Pulaski Scholarship Ball at the Gus Genetti Hotel and Conference Center Saturday evening and awarded a $2,000 scholarship to William Borysewicz of Nanticoke, a second year sociology and theology student. Borysewicz holds a 4.0 GPA at King’s College.

Well NE Pennsylvania's Polish Americans are like 4th-6th generation in America. Hardly any of them speak any Polish.

Shameful really - claiming to be proud of "Polish heritage" but not speaking a word of your ancestors language... :/

Now, if they had awarded a prize for an essay written in Polish, I'd be impressed.

^ so much hate and judgement coming from you all.
Whats wrong with Polish-Americans, many of the several generations American, getting together, forming a scholarship committee, raising money, all while propagating Polish culture/history, and in the end rewarding a hard working well deserved Polish-American?

Some of you people....

the problem is that they sometimes get it wrong.

Good for William. Never mind, that he speaks little or no polish. Being aware of one's heritage is an accomplishment in itself, especially in 3rd or 5th generation.

Most Americans are proud to claim some kind of heritage. You don't need to know how to speak that language. This is part of american/canadian culture you jealous, edit.

True. Many people born to Polish parents (or any other nationality) in America speak the language of their parents well. The 3rd generation most of the time only knows a few words, it's like this in every country.

I fail to see how claiming to be something and yet not speaking the language of the place is something to be proud of.

So the entire country is proud of being unable to speak the languages of their ancestors?

Jealous? Of dumb Americans that claim to be Polish and yet don't even know the word for grandmother?

Yeah...right.

Virtually everyone in canada/usa can trace their ancestry to europe or elsewhere. Many like to acknowledge their ancestors' origins. They don't literally mean that they're Polish, french, scottish etc, they simply mean that they are of that heritage/decent. What part of this can't you understand? It's unbelievable how simply minded you are.

Can they really, given that the vast majority of Europeans can't - due to centuries of border shift, blurred lines, intermarriage and more.

So why do they stick their stupid noses into Polish affairs, then? .

delphe whats your problem here? were you rejected a US visa or something? Yes, not everyone speaks their ancestor langugae, some do not speak it well, such is life. But there are many that work, run numerous great Polish organizations that do not speak well if at all. Its unfortunate, but to call them dumb and insult them is ridiculous and simply reflects poorly on you.
This has nothing to do with Canada / USA. There are tons of Polish descendents in Belarus who do not speak polish well and in other countries. Its just the way people adapt to different socieities.

My family can because people kept records of who their parents were. They just wrote down a record and gave it to other family members, passed it down from generation to generation. In fact, the Polish side of the family has the record that is most complete. My mother's side of the family which is more American has gaps in their record because certain relatives took off and left for other places, eloping with scoundrels and not letting anyone know what their last name was before they got married, nor where they lived before they married, where they were born. It's very hard to trace the ancestry of people like that. No one like that exists on the Polish side of the family so it's easy to trace several generations due to precise record keeping.
