-> No opinions, just thought this was a very nice article about the Polish president and about Polonia in the US. <-

Polish President Says Cleveland is Like Home

From pioneering surgical procedures to stuffed cabbage and beets, the President of Poland got a wide-ranging taste of Northeast Ohio, Thursday. ideastreamŸ's David C. Barnett has this report on the visit of Bronislaw Komorowski, which began at the Cleveland Clinic.

A delegation of the Clinic’s Polish-born doctors, including world renown face transplant pioneer Maria Siemionow, presented Mr. Komorowski with his own Cleveland Clinic lab coat.  As he buttoned it up, the President noted that he and Siemionow came from the same town in Poland, and that she had lobbied him to pay a visit to Cleveland.

After a quick tour of the hospital, he was whisked off to a dinner reception at the Polish American Cultural Center in Slavic Village, where diners were serenaded by some Chopin nocturnes.  The Polish diaspora in the United States --- also known as “Polonia” --- can be found in many cities, most notably Chicago.  Eugene Bak, who heads the local cultural center said it was nice for Cleveland and it’s 200,000 Polish residents to get some recognition.

EUGENE BAK:  It was an an honor to have him.  It was an opportunity to show that Polonia was not just Chicago and New York.

Before leaving, Bronislaw Komorowski told those gathered that he had just spent two whirlwind days of diplomatic activity in Washington and that it was nice to loosen his tie and spend some time in what he called, “the Polish Home” of Cleveland.

I'm sure you're right although major changes are coming to the way information is processed.

Sure, but I don't think you can change all the people who are going to leak that information.

I bet he ignored Chicago because of how Kaczynski was always greeted in chi-town. Its a big FU to the chicago-polonia.

Although it's nice to see cleavland poles getting some exposure and recognition from the polish government.

Or, maybe they didnt pay for him enough to show up??? Its pretty funny how you Brits think you know so much about Chicago from your BBC Media.
That last time you must of have spent days researching anti -Adam Andrzejewski propaganda and then tried to sabotage his campaigning on this forum. Whats in it for a limey like you? Have you ever been to Illinois, or in this case Ohio?
Adam Andrzejewski Is running for Governor of Illinois !!!!

Congratulations on a new dumb polock president!

Im surprised he didnt pick Detroit, He must think its still the 1950`s

I wonder why He didnt come to Polands capitol, its only a couple hundred miles away,
He must not be that popular with Poles if he went to Cleveland instead of Chi?

I don't think the President of Poland has to worry about how much it costs to go visit certain towns.

Uh...I use the PKW site to know about who voted for who and where. I suppose it's a liberal conspiracy website, yeah?

There's nothing funnier than making fun of "Polish" Americans who don't speak Polish and who only use it for political purposes.

As you've been told - why should he visit somewhere if they didn't vote for him? The Chicago Polonia are somewhat hostile towards Komorowski and have published plenty of nonsense about him, so why visit? Best to leave them alone.

Is Slavic Village still a thriving urbanly renwed Pol-Am community? It was an old decrepit Polonian quarters which underwent urban renewal in the late 1970s with Podhale-style facades and Polish street festivals. Is this still the case?

Detroit

Hamtramck has only a few Poles left, mostly Middle Easterners nowadays, been there 2 years ago, Detroit looks like s**t. Driving through downtown on the freeway you can loose a wheel on one of the potholes.

Perhaps because it has the largest concentration of Poles in the U.S? Would that be a good reason?

He refused to meet with Polonia but he went to the Holocaust Museum, I suppose to please his wife.

Not a lot in the press about his usual gaffs, this time with Obama. He must be used to being embarassed by now, I know we are.

He doesn't visit Poznan, Gdansk, Wroclaw or Szczecin regularly, despite it having a large concentration of Poles. In fact, he doesn't even visit the UK or Holland regularly, despite all the Poles living there, too.

It's his choice as President to decide where to visit.

Perhaps because he realised that meeting with a bunch of idiotic, backwards people would be counter productive, particularly as many of them have outdated views concerning "what is Poland"?

1jola:

Doesn't bother me. He's doing a grand job as President - bringing up issues relevant to the people (visa waiver), not obstructing the Sejm and generally being quite peaceful and inclusive.

Don't you have any artifical gravestones to be praying at?

No, but I would give you an English grammar lesson, if I cared enough.

honestly, it's not. most people in greenpoint are quite poor, there's nothing aesthetic about the place (aside from a few historic districts, every town has people with money)....but for what it's worth, I still dig Greenpoint. I had a friend who lived there and loved it. Brooklyn in itself is a pretty fun town but you would never walk through the polish section of Greenpoint and say, "this is a nice town." it's run down looking like every other polish town i've ever been to.

a run-down look of polish neighbourhoods is the fault of polams who decide to work in ****** blue collar jobs instead of having good education and being greedy capitalists

The whole point of his visit is he visited the cultural center and the clinic and said some nice things about it and the community, not the fact that parts of Cleveland are run down. Focus on the positive and not the negative. It is the Christmas season!
